  • 2004 T5 Starting Issues..starter motor gone?

    Hi guys
    My 2004 2.5 TDI axe T5 clapped out going up a steep hill a few weeks back and had to be towed. The intank fuel pump was replaced as a mechanic suspected that may be the issue but still no start after this work was done. It has been cranked over so many times I was wondering if I may have buggered the starter motor now...this happened to my old 96 T4. Is there a way to test to see if the starter motor is still ok? Any other suggestions...air in fuel lines etc? Thanks very much for the assistance.

    There are ways to test the starter, -not much to go on there-. first make sure there is plenty of battery voltage while
    trying to crank, at least 10 volts, if there is, then test the voltage at the starter positive lead and earth lead, hopefully
    10 volts or more while cranking or trying to crank, if there is and the starter won't turn properly then it is crook, that's
    assuming you hear the solenoid click in.

      Needs more than 10V to turn the starter sufficently to fire.

      Engine needs to be spinning to at least 280rpm.

      Have you scanned it?

            Their rules got them into trouble. But seriously, mine will start as low as 10V at cranking.

                My 2.0 petrol is so easy to start if thebattery goes flat on our driveway , sometimes if I have been listening to the stereo with its two amps running the battery will die after a few hpours . So I just jump behind the wheel one foot out the door and give it a gentle push backwards and let it roll for afew metres drop the clutch and it starts right up , not sure if its 280 rpm by then though .

                  Be careful doing that. Back in the late 60s, a friend who owned a 1200 beetle was too tight to by a new battery & would let his car roll in reverse down his drive & drop the clutch to start his car. One day the clutch said that's enough & tore the centre out of the driven plate.
                  I imagine it was more expensive to replace the clutch than to buy a new battery.
                  Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
