Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T5.1 4motion purchasing / test drive tips

Hi Again, looks like I might soon be another ex Syncro_T3_Australia member becoming a T5 owner.

Question today - Can anyone give me any tips of things to look out for when purchasing a T5.1? I'm looking for a 4motion with automatic and difflock probably 2011 -13 or so. Ideally highline so I'm assuming check sliding doors operate smoothly etc.

In particular are there any tests I can do to check that DSG automatic? Did I read somewhere try reversing up a hill or similar? Any common failure points to check?

    Thanks!

G'day heyasam, I have a 2009/10 Caravelle 4motion manual (200,000k) and am very happy with it. (I had a T3 Syncro Camper in the mid 1990's - never should have sold it!). The Caravelle doesn't soak up the bumps as well as the old T3, but is a treat to cruise on the highway. I also have a Skoda Superb (2010) with the 7 speed DSG just coming up to 100,000k. I'd would make sure the gearbox changes are sharp. I notice in the Skoda that first to second in particular can chatter a bit when driving slowly as in taking off and turning. Never seems to happen if you give it a bit of oomph. The other thing that annoys me at times is if you accelerate very lightly from standstill up a slight rise (either forward or reverse) the gearbox will disengage.

      Hey Sam

Note in the Multivan range all T5.1 in Oz are DSG

In Transporters manual gearbox remained available through to T6 for MY16.

Manual 4-motion was discontinued for MY17...

Fairly rare to find Multivans with Diff Locks.

Some of the various state ex-ambulance and ex-police 4-motions have a rear Diff lock.
