I was lucky enough to thrash the new S3 at mooney mooney a month ago, it handles really well, but i reckon it needs more power, i was chasing a S4 and i get close to it at the corner, but the gap stretch when it comes to the straight...

Managed to reach close to the end of 4th gear on some straight (about 180km/h i guess, really no chance to look down)

    The bucket seat is awesome...

    And hell, top quality interior..

Only problem is i cant afford one...

    It is 75k drive away...

i have owned my polo for about 3 months now and couldnt be happier. its an 06 model black gti with a apr tune. its a great little car, good on fuel and has some poke when you want it.
but i also owned a evo7 for a year and have nothing but praise for it also. the only thing wrong with it is the 350km per tank that goes with it. if you havent been in a late model evo going around a corner it will really open your eyes, they are absolutly amazing. and they are rather impressive in a staight line if you know hoe to drive one.
i just think as great as the little polo is, its hard to compare it to an evo. my two cents
the age old discussion on which car is best haha. its always a spirited topic..
but if i was in jap and had a spare 80k, it would be hard to go past the new gtr
Good to see you had some reasoning, and there is no denying the Evo would be better round corners (especially after seeing the Top Gear episode comparing STI and Evo). But, on figures posted in many places, the Polo GTI's 0-100 time competes with the Evo's.

cheers mate, thats what we were after. someone who has owned both an evo and a polo GTI and given them a good working. as i said before, i completely agree that we are no match on a track but from what i have seen so far 'on paper', it seemed as though our chipped Polo GTI was a real straight line competitor.

*i thought the new GTR was supposed to bust the $100K mark....are they really that much cheaper in japan. and hey, no LCT's there.

in response to the original question. in a word. no. although i have no interest in evos what so ever, or rexies, i'd have no hesitation in backing it around a race track every time. i think even a 200kw polo would struggle. having said that, i'd honestly prefer a chipped polo. the whole 200kw 4 cylinder all wheel drive catagory is a scaled down race car. the polo is not.

i have no doubt that a chipped polo could keep up with an evo, but i find it hard to believe it could beat it. but the car is only as fast as the driver.
a while back i used to own a little toyota gt starlet, a 1.3l that used to make 220hp atw. it ran consistant 12.9s on street tyres down the 1/4 but on the street i couldnt keep up with my mate who had a evo1 that ran low 13s. thats the advantage of 4wd, doesnt matter where you are you know what it can do.

as for the gtr in aus looks like we are gonna get ripeed. over in jap and america is so cheap. cant see how they can justify selling them so for so much more over here.

maybe the market here for them is so petty that they crank the prices up to make the costings worthwhile. the only people driving the R34 GTR here on the Gold Coast are the cashed up Arabs that spend an absolute sh*tload on the cars and stall them at every set of lights. theres an arab bloke in a TT Supra getting around with 'DRAGER' on the plates. a few years ago me and my mate hit him up for a race in a Familia GTX and he said (no joke), "NO WAY, I DON'T DRAG". we cracked up laughing and drove off while the guy bunny hopped down the road trying to get the thing going - damn those big turbo's and heavy duty clutches.

i imagine the cashed up yanks and japs would be all over the new GTR though.

                I think the EVO X 80-120km/ph time in 3rd gear was 3.7sec.

Power problems are easily fixed by an APR chip and other goodies ..... 188kw -> 239kw in a flash ... literally

and I've been offered driveaway $65000 (RRP $65900) on a 3 door a while ago. It was very tempting, but I was holding out for a 5 door.

I just convinced my cousin to buy an S3 over an R32. The bastard will drive it from the dealer to an APR dealer....I hate him for it!!!!

                              Actually .....

If I was going to spend $65K ..... I would not even look at the EVO. It would be a 135i (a stretch to $72K) or a 5 door S3.

In a straight line both would in std form be no slower than an EVO and both would be far better daily use cars. With a chip both would be significantly quicker for less than $2K extra.

Not even too mention quality and prestige. BMW & AUDI >>>>>>>>> EVO

No contest there ..... at all ....
First of all..with that much money for Jap car I would consider making an investment on a property first and with the money left over I would buy a polo GTI and get it chipped ! and enjoy the 3 year warranty!but JEEE I love this dam car!.... I mean, I’m having so much fun driving it that I can’t get enough! loll I just love the thrill and excitement of driving it, and how it pins you in your seat! There is nothing I don’t like about the Polo GTI! It’s a perfect all round car! My mate who owns a 2006 M3 convertible test drove my Polo the other day and said he can see why I’m having so much fun driving it!... he commented on the power, actually freaked out over how much power it had! And he loved the handling and also said it was a very well built solid car which makes you feel secure in it!
Also, if I had 75 g's to blow on a car, I would purchase an R32 with a turbo kit which would blow the doors off almost anything on the road today or an Audi A5 which is one of my favourite cars at the moment... But I would think twice about buying an Audi considering how rapidly they can drop in value.

And your car would be in getting repaired more often too
