  • Chipped Polo quicker than EVO X ??

    afternoon lads,
i've just purchased the August edition of the wheels mag and had a read through the WRX STI vs EVO X feature. the main stats i was interested in are as following:

    EVO X: 0-100km/h in 6.3sec
    0-400m in 14.4sec

    WRX STI: 0-100km/h in 5.7
    0-400m in 13.8sec

i have no doubt in saying these testers are good drivers. i thought more would come from the EVO X but it doesn't seem its as good as its cracked up to be.

i'd still drive the EVO X though, but i'd rather the STI Spec-R for that money. i say the Subie has it this time around.

    Cheers,
    Rhys

I watched the top gear review. They gave it to the STI but it handled like a tugboat! Stig got it around the track faster than the evo though which is quite wierd. On looks alone the EVO wins hands down.

I wouldn't go near an STI. Evo is definitely going to be in my garage in a few years, they are amazing. They aren't built for straight line speed, so it's a useless comparison.

I agree the EVO is a better car IMHO. Sube's make good cars but the styling is just too RICE for me with this new hatchback, hunchback theme. Seems people agree looking at different car forums.

No chance whatsoever sorry, you would have to 100% to get near even the most ham fisted of teenagers, and besides how often do get the magic 6.1 to 100 anyway? Not often I would imagine...

i hated the looks of the WRX when it was first released but when the STI came out, the looks had grown on me and now i really like the STI (still not the standard WRX though). the evo X has an awesome front end but the rear end just ruins it IMO, i hate that lancer rear end!
it will be interesting to see the EVO XI and XII as they will most probably keep the general shape and update little things such as the lights etc. hopefully same goes for the STI and the back lights are updated, not a big fan of those either.

i have a soft spot for the 'hatchbacks' in this world so this is why i like the STI over the EVO X.

as for those performance figures Golf Houso, they would be the best out of several runs, so they probably would have been on that 100% (or close to it) on those published runs. it would be awesome to get a hold of all the data logged on that day of testing, seeing the discrepancies of between each run.

put the three on a track (STI, EVO, Polo GTI) and unfortunately we would get ripped to shreds

Don't make STI's (and WRXs) and EVO's out to be that good in day to day driving. They have a terrible tendency to bog down at the start. Too little revs upon takeoff and its quite slow as it takes time to wind up again.

Its a case of too much traction .... a problem I wish I had......

In order to get them going quickly you really need to launch hard and it can't be good over an extended period of time.....

Granted, you won't launch a Polo well EVERY time, but a good launch will seriously embarrass an EVO driver that does not launch well.

.... Embarrass does not neccessarily mean beat, it means stay close, which if you drive a $70K car and a $27K car sticks close happens....

If you prefer hatchbacks, then just wait till Mitsubishi release their Ralliart Hatch. It's basically a slightly less powerful EVO in the hatch shape and its real nice.

And before anyone asks, no i don't work for Mitsubishi. I've just finished working on their advertising campaign for the new Evolution so i'm all up to speed with what they're doing

Yeah, the Ralliart hatch looks the goos too, and for way cheaper from what I have read. You do only get a 5 speed manual box and no tricky center diff apparently, but I would take that for about 15g's off the Evo X.

And you'd be completley wrong. These testers are horrible drivers, and really easy to beat. The Aussie mags give off super unrealistically slow, bad times for almost everything they drive.

For example, Motor managing 13.36 in the MY03 Gallardo that the rest of Earth managed 11.8-12.0 in.

Wheels doing 12.4 in the 996 GT2 that the rest of the world managed 11.7-11.9 in.

Motor doing 4.0/11.9 in the Murcielago LP640 which has done bests of 3.0/11.2 in Europe and averages 3.3/11.4 worldwide.

The list goes on and on.

Both the EVO and STi should hit 100km/h in 4.7-5.0 seconds and do 12.8-13.0 for the 1/4. Those times are laughable.

you cant compare an evo to a polo, the polo just couldnt keep up in any way.

The Polo is a 30K poo box compared to the EVO X. That's all anyone needs to know.
