  • Weird gearbox noise

Hi, I'm a car hypochondriac recently.

This morning got in to drive to work and shifted into first and there was a 'clunk' as it hit the plate, long story short whenever I shift in a left direction 1st, 2nd, there is an audible cluck as the stick hits the left side during the shift....

No major issue just a new sound, it doesn't sound as graceful as it used to (ie Silent)

    Any thoughts?

I have no diagnosis for you, however I do have an opinion.

When you get a chance you should drop into the dealer and get a check up.

Then if it is something thats needs to be fixed you can book it in to be fixed.

    Peace

        Big Update.

Took the car in today to the dealer and guess what it apparently needs a complete new gearbox housing, two days work and a courtesy car plus the part isn't in the country. I can't believe it, only 7500 on the clock, any experience with this anyone ? This shouldn't happen, should it? I have treated it with nothing but the utmost respect.

        Cheers

Gearboxes seem to be a weak point for Polo's. Well not weak as in can't take much power, but they either work well or they don't. Bit weird. Atleast they are *not* like Impreza boxes which I've heard can destroy themselves if you flat shift and you've tweaked the car.

OK picked it up....Form says linkages were adjusted to no avail then removed from gearbox and requires 'New Gear Selector Mechanism" on order

My first gear is making a (rapidly worsening) almost groaning noise (as Jimmy Mac will attest to) at any speed. He had a very serious face when he said "you need to see the dealer".

Apart from that I don't get the crunching and other prblems unless you try ligthning shifts at high revs and beat the cables/synchros.

You could have done a seach and found there have been lots of replacement gearboxes

I don't get why people would wait to see a dealer for something that is covered by warranty. I'd much rather see my dealer ASAP then be stuck on the side of the road somewhere

i get a funny "clink" noise after shifting from first to second. This only happens when i first drive off. The car is parked in a multi storey garage, and my bay is right by the ramp, i drive out in first and usually shift into second right before i go down the ramp or when im going down the ramp. I clutch in, shift and once im in gear i hear that "clink" sound. Its very confusing because i only hear it in that very specific situation and also i can't think of any rational explanation for it.

groaning noise... I get the same, I don't have crunching issues with shifting at any RPM.

But I have diff noise at coasting in 4th gear, or with light throttle at around 50-60km/h.

2nd gear has diff noise around 1500-2500rpm noise when throttle off
groaning noise in the 1st gear, sounds ok when you rev the car fast, but if you increase the rpm slowly, it has bit noisier than other gears.

Gearbox noise is the worst part of my car. I changed the oil to recall spec, and still the same. But then never had crunching issues.

Took it to 2 different dealers - they said it's okay. gearbox oil was clean when drained.

Let my engineer friend (mechanical) drove it, said it's diff noise, and should be fine as long as it doesn't get louder...

I am definitely getting an extended warranty when mine expires in Feb 09.

hey guys. when i accelerate slowly (usually from a stop) i get a grinding noise coming from the front left of the car. sounds as though my tyres are rubbing, but they're not. is this the gearbox?

the sound disappears once i go beyond walking pace.

I also have this faintly. Spoke to VW (18months ago) and they let me drive the red press test car as a comparison after they said it was OK and checked that the oil was clean. The press test car was much worse than mine. Then drove a brand new one and it was about the same, so I gave up on it.

Never got any worse. I have no crunching issues either.

Yes I did test drove a couple and they all had faint noise in 4th but just like the press car mine is a little noisier. My first gear noise is like Urs grant. Typing off my new iPhone!! :0)
