If it was your diff mate you would generally get it in every gear. Remember groans in a certain gear doeant mean that its the bearing for that gear unless its a gear noise as such. For example if you get a bearing noise in 2nd then remember this gear is now locked onto the shaft and not freewheeling so the bearing noise will be 1st or 3rd and so on. This is a big mistake when diagnosing boxes 2nd gear bearing - ah it must be 2nd Wrong!. On the other hand a Gear noise is a different story. But like i say a noisy diff will show up in every gear.

thanks for the explanation Jmac. if it is just gear bearing noise, is it something to be worried about?

I know you guys are having your oil doe under warranty. I use and have had great success with Redline MTL. Will cost you around $70 for a 2litres mate. Does a great job of deadening noises and also will make your shift smoother as it has great friction properties thus making the friction hubs on your syncros work a lot better.

Jmac, really appreciate your input on this.

          Should we be worried?

The noise hasn't changed. It's been 11000km since I got it. I think the car was driven fair hard at early stage as it was a demo car.

Would VW decline any warranty repairs if I use Redline gearbox oil? I heard good things about them in the past.

          Cheers,
          Han

(dealers know jack ****, and they don't care as long as the oil looks clean..)

and also should we be worried about bearings? I am thinking of getting extended warranty because of this
          06 Polo GTI - REVO Stage 2 = 140kw @ wheels.
06 Golf GTI - Bluefin Stage 1 blacked out with ED30 theme, leather, xenon, etc.

I too noticed a whirring noise when coasting in 4th between 40-50km/h

I was thinking about taking it back to the dealer, but from what I've gathered reading this thread, there's nothing to really be done about it?

Sounds like it could be more like your bottom unpuckering as the surge in acceleration briefly stops.

Does the noise continue after you change gears?

if not I'd say when acceleration has begun again your bottom has once again puckered thus preventing wind escaping.

Still, if it's under warranty, take it to the dealer and have a mechanic go along on a drive with him (preferably her if they have one) in the passenger seat with his (or her) head between your legs and then go for a bit of a drive to see if the PSSHHTTT noise is in fact emanating from your bottom.

No major issue just a new sound, it doesn't sound as graceful as it used to (ie Silent)

                    Any thoughts?
I think I have come under the dreaded gearbox curse. Whenever I hit the plate going into first, I hear the clunk. You don't hear it when you hit the plate going into fifth.

I also get, occasionally, a very mild crunching noise when going into second. So off to a dealer I go tomorrow

Anyone had any warranty work done at Barloworld Five Dock?
