Next problem, running temperature seems low. I noticed it on the last drive before I parked up to sort out this air leak and measured it today with the data logger.
Takes ages to get up to temp, sits on 70-72C. If I stop for a while it'll come up to 90. Go again and it'll work it's way back down again.
It's cold at the moment but I think the thermostat may be gone as well.
Interestingly the temp gauge in the car will read 90C from about 73C onwards

That's exactly what my car was doing when the thermostat was stuck open. Time to put in a newie

I did my S3 and Polo in an afternoon, easily. Access is a bit **** on the polo is the SAI pump is still there, but you binned that, correct. I forget if I moved the alternator or not.

I have some lower temp stats coming from the uk, open a bit earlier. gauge still reads 90 though as they are damped heavily to stop owner panicking abut temp swings.

Just had a look, looks tight
Yes I've binned the sai pump etc. That helps.
Read some articles about moving the alternator. Whats easier, intake manifold or alternator?

I left manifolds in place on both/ Whether that made it harder or not, I couldn't say....

The outlet pipes can be delicate, I have seen them crack. I keep a spare new one handy when doing this job. Just be gentle with it.

I've got another US shipment coming up so may have another yolo moment and pop a metal ie cover in the cart
It's pretty consistent around 70C and will come up to 90 when stopped. Should be ok to tootle around on for a couple of weeks? I've got my house move coming up and I'm flat out at the moment otherwise I'd rip into it.
Won't be driving it much as I have the ute.

I did mine, left everything else including SAI in place. Not a 'big' job, but damn fiddly. I got carried away by screwing one side up but didn't check the seating of the O ring...

We can all guess where it leaked from straight away

Given the other work you've done on the car - you'll be right.

I didn't remove the alternator or manifold when I did mine. As Gav and stuwey said, it's a bit of a PITA job but it's not to bad. I just used a long extension ratchet with a joint and socket on the end.

Guy who did it for me loosened the alternator and took out the hose that goes to the throttle body, and did it from there.
