Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • OEM strut top nut

Went to check the strut top nut on the damper shaft was tight the other day. 22mm tube spanner was too small, 24mm too big. The damper shaft allen key size was just as weird - 6mm too small, 8mm too big.
WTF! didn't know a 7mm allen key or 23mm spanner existed or is this strut some kind of imperial hitch hiker on our german spanish metric car.

    help with tool sizes please

    confused

7mm isn't that uncommon Sam. I bought my first one aged 18 to do the brakes on an Escort XR3 and have owned one for 30 years now.

Surprised that the 24mm didn't grip it enough to allow you to tighten it up though. TBH I use my battery impact gun for taking them off and that doesn't usually struggle

Is it an allen or a spline head? The ones on my Bilsteins are splined

24mm might have just but I never attempted because I couldn't get the right allen key anyway. Was also doing it with strut in the car in the work carpark at night with extension bits to get the allen bit down the guts of a tube spanner. I gave up very quickly.
Ok good to know that 7's exist. I'll have another crack soon.

not everyone is old enough to remember the days before fuel injection and i didn't think ford escorts had brakes? at least mine didn't as far as i can remember...

i just bought one of these to remove the strut top bearing on the s3, i hope its the right tool. if it doesn't work can i just shock it off with an 18v impact wrench?

                You shouldn't need that for a MK1.

I have them anyway if you need one.

                Just gun them off.
