Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I was going to email you, the micro-can works on mkV Golf and beyond, though not the polo. The cable and software are different/restricted.

      • I can replicate that driving style on the street.

I like what I'm reading Sean. Great work

        • By way of an update, the FTG turbo has been on for a few weeks and have just finalized the tuning of the car this week. Big shout to Gav for all your input on fitting the turbo and the tuning.

The FTG K04-001 is their upsized version with larger compressor and exhaust wheels. It wasn't my plan to order the larger one, I thought I'd ordered the standard size with a billet wheel, but in all the comms with Lee at FTG it turned out being the upsized with a cast wheel.

So for the tuning, got to uploading a new base tune on Friday night and than to logging. Gavin introduced me to some new logging software, ME7 Logger from nefmoto (nefarious motorsport). It's awesome, so powerful for logging what's going on, 20 samples per second and 60 items. So I'd load a tune, do a log in ME7 and send that log back to the tuner for tweaking. With such a sample rate and so much data, it was easy to see what's going and tweak accordingly. I'm absolutely chuffed with the final tune. It's more conservative than what I ran on the prior turbo, partially cos of the larger turbo and that I plan to spend a lot of time at the track, so need to consider longevity and reliability.

By way of stats, it's running at 18psi, previous turbo/tune was 21psi. I did some power runs last night to log with my GPS laptimer. My 80-120kpm in 3rd is marginally quicker than with the previous set-up, I recorded a 3.1s Vs a 3.3s on the previous. 4th gear was quite a bit slower, recorded 4.2s Vs 3.6s of the old and it felt it. As the speed reaches 150kph, it's making back some of that lost time. Looking at the g-forces (and feel), this new set-up holds boost much better to redline, whereas the previous turbo (hybrid K03s) was so strong in the mid range. This turbo is really strong in the 5000-6500rpm range, which is conducive to track driving. I also find it really good around the street, a bit slower to spool which actually seems more drivable.

I've also put on a 2.5" oval muffler on to quieten things down a bit, which has worked a treat. I still have the 3" cannon which can be interchanged as I had a bracket fabricated to do so.

Off to lakeside on Sunday for a shake down before timeattack in August.

            • I took the newly refreshed red devil back to Lakeside over the week. Since it's last outing I've done the FTG turbo, retune, new front rotors (DBA T3) and new pads (QFM A1RM) and softened the rear sway bar from hard to soft.

All in all, was a very good day out, the car ran very well, the brakes were great with plenty of bite, power delivery much better than before which I believe is due to the larger turbo slowing response a bit, plus more power in the top end at the sacrifice of some in the lower mid range. Back to running 3rd through hungry and eastern loop whilst being able to have throttle control.

The change of the rear sway bar was probably the biggest change to the detriment of lap time. Whilst the car felt safer to some degree, it also lost front end grip at higher speed. I was typically slower entering the straight and coming under the bridge and it'd push wider on the dog leg. Lap times suffered to the sum of 1-1.5secs per lap. I was only marginally (0.5s) quicker than my much less modded silver polo, which runs the rear sway bar soft. So I wonder/assume the rear wing is influencing the front end grip quite a bit when at speed.

I'd be keen to get opinions on running the front sway bar hard and rear sway bar hard, I think that's my next thing to try. With the rear hard and front soft, it gripped nicely but lacked feel. It was toey/over steery on cold tyres, but ok once hot.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, tighten up front and rear and see how it feels. May be bad on the street but easy to adjust back and forth if required.

                    • Bit of an update, so the new semi slicks, kumho v70's, are now on the enkei rims to be ran for track days and I had the old Audi TT rims refurbished at The Wheel Workshop at Albion in Brisbane, to now be ran as daily wheels. I've had to raise the front of the car 1cm to fit the kumho's as they are a 215/45/17, not a 40 series tyre. Also decided to remove the wing and only put that on for track days. Wheel Workshop did a great job on the refurb, they look better than new and very reasonably priced. Now the car looks so unassuming It also got a good detailing last week, clay bar and polish.

Thanks buddy. Yup. It's like a dream. Still can't get over the whole finish line fiasco. If only I'd kept on the throttle...
