Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sam, what's your end goal for the car mate, run quarter mile, highway runs or circuit?

If it's a top-end style of turbo (i.e. larger) on a 1.8l, would that mean needing more revs to get the most out of it, so a 7k rev limit or something.

I was thinking the same thing.
To be honest unless you are going to make this thing into a proper track car there is really no point in going to a much larger turbo as happy laps won't allow its full potential.

Sean's car hammers around lakeside and regularly keeps pace with the more powerful cars.

              End goal: fun!

I'm not looking into turning it into a dedicated track car, or 'anything' car really, it's my 'daily drive' car
Lakeside did reveal some things that I don't like about the car though...

There's been some really good feedback here guys. This topic has been chewing away at me for the last few months as it's my next step. In a perfect world you could jump in one of each to compare, but it's great to have educated opinions to help make the decision. From what a lot are saying, it seems that a K04 variant is as much power as the little FWD polo setup can handle. I agree it would be pissing in the wind fitting too large a turbo just for numbers.

I know Plautos runs a GT2860R and seems pretty happy with it. Traction is always the limiting factor which I think was covered in a similar thread I started. A Wavetrac TBD has always been on the cards, pending final turbo setup and how it drives.

Is it just me or is the Frankenturbo cheap! It makes me wonder why more aren't running this setup..
I think I remember Troy saying that the exhaust manifold that comes with the kit is crap..
What software options are available for this kind of setup, is anyone running CC?

I agree with the LSD comments, less $$$ on big power, more on traction. I struggle with the stock turbo in some conditions, more torque would be silly without investment on getting it down.

Plautos has also done some great stuff with the front suspension geometry.

I don't know if you'd call Plautos polo a polo anymore! Amazing work in that thing...

Yeah after reading and doing a bit more thinking it seems like the money I would save going BT would be better channeled into the LSD fund to get that quicker. It was always going to be a K04 or smaller BT ..or MT I should say I'm just glad I'm coming to some conclusions and being happy with the decisions being made.

That said, Frankenturbo, supporting mods ..go!

No seriously, if the exhaust manifold that comes with the kit is crap I was always planning to go with an ATP or JBS manifold. The next limiting factor is the tune, who has good tunes for these? I don't know much about GIAC but that seems to be what Troy and Van are running with the FT. The tune is going to determine if I need 3" MAF, FPR, injectors, etc..

I would hit up Gav (Custom Code) or Greg (Viezu) and see what they can do for you as the tunes can account for various mods.

Having seen Sean's stat's for lakeside on Saturday i don't see the need to go much bigger to be honest.

Frankenturbo are popular. Just not in Australia. Check out the vwvortex forums.
They are good value for money because they are a relatively easy bolt on.
If I were you I would get the F23 setup and run a manual boost controller in parallel with the NJ75.

Your software combined with the setup above would limit boost and spikes.
When you're ready you could then install rods and up the boost to suit.

The F23 will not run out of breath till 7000 rpm. Plus you get minimal lag.

To install a bigger turbo you really need to build the motor and the valvetrain to suit 8000 rpm to really take advantage of the breathing capacity and to make up for the lag.

With regard to manifold check out this thread:
                      VWVortex.com - which exhaust mani for F23?

I suggest you ask Doug from Frankenturbo direct for his recommendations. Can't hurt.

Good luck. Lots of choices. All good.

If your looking at getting a Frankenturbo upgrade, then have a look at the link below - DNA Tuning are selling a turbo + tune package for the 1.8L like the one in your Polo.

I'm sure that if you had your heart set on a different tuner for the software that you could strike a "hardware only" type deal with John from DNA - although as a customer of his, i can vouch for the quality of their tunes.

What is the engine code on the South African GTI's ? These were built in South Africa and not Spain like the Australian GTI's.

                                Possibly different internals there ?
