In fact, the stock filter is usually the least restrictive part of an intake system. Get the plumbing right and the filter almost becomes inconsequential.
Honestly, if someone starts one more K&N filter thread on this forum...

You must be able to notice VERY VERY VERY small gains in power.
I used to have a XR6T and at one point when doing some mods dynoed it with stock filter at 276rwkw. I fitted a K&N panel filter and it dynoed 277rwkw.. That is really sucking some air through
So on our cars expect less than 1kw.
The marketing people at K&N really hone in on people like you.

I've read articles on the air flow maths, but a few people have commented on it.
My mechanic recommended it to me in my last car, I trust him.

There was an interesting article on AutoSpeed many years ago that tested what areas had restrictions in the intake.
http://autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=0646
Similar testing was done by someone on these forums.
http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...t=restrictions
In both cases the filter posed very little restiction. There were other areas of the intake that had larger restrictions.

Key Points:
1. This car has a major pressure drop through its standard intake system.
2. Therefore, this car has an intake system that is restrictive to flow.
3. Most of the restriction occurs after the airfilter.
4. As is the case with most cars, the filter element itself poses little restriction.
The airfilter as a... negative pressure is a total frame-up created by those with vested interests in selling drop-in aftermarket replacement filters."
Now where's Dubdubdubdot's Rick Rolled link?
