Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Couldn't help reply after reading this thread lol.

    Coilovers are essentially a "Coil over a Shock Absorber", so think logically.

    It is a Coil, over a Shock, aka COIL OVER. The difference realistically is the coilovers have a different dampening rate usually compared to a normal shock as they are for a 'sports ride' and give more flexibility with the double spring setup on the coil for certain kits.

    So if you go Koni Yellow and Combined them with a kw spring, h&r spring, eibach spring or custom spring it would realistically be the same as coil over setup as a v1 or v1 on most brands.

    KW and Weitec come from the same factory. You will find that KW's are stainless due to the salt on the roads in Europe, where certain lines including Weitec are galvanised. For Australian road conditions they are beyond more than enough. I have had KW V2s, driving with v3's, clubsports and v1's .. and currently have Weitec V2s you could call them and they feel no different to my friends S3 with his kw V1's except firmer (as mine are set to almost completely firm)

    If i had the choice in FK, AP or something cheaper;

    From cheapest to most costly;
    Koni yellow+ springs of your choice for height (kw, h&r, eibach, weitecs)
    Weitecs
    Bilsteins
    KW

    And unless you are tracking your car every week, and you have Corner Balanced your car, done complete weight reduction (seats out etc). Why does everyone worry SO much about what "coil over" they get, its almost amusing and 'trend' orientated vs common sense.
    What’s behind you doesn’t matter..

      This is why I'm only going for cheapies... I don't have any intention to track the car, and if anything, I just want to drop the car lower, and call me a tight arse, but I cannot justify paying through the arse for a set of KW's, or even Weitec's.

        I thought that the difference between a set of coilovers and a set of aftermarket dampers & springs (or "cup kit") was that the coilovers have height adjustment built in. The dampers in either setup could be adjustable.
        AFAIK the name itself isn't really meaningful since a set of aftermarket dampers & springs ends up being coils over a dampers once installed.

        I do intend to track my car but not every week.

          I may be selling noone's AP coilovers that i recently bought along with new topmounts/bearings. Installed them in a friends Pogo and he loved it so much compared to standard setup that he has bit the bullet and bought KW's like me.

          Asking $370, but i'll have a For Sale thread soon.

              Well he did, but he wants better now since he can see how much of an improvement it is.

                I agree with the 'coil over'/springs and shocks argument. Same thing in the end. The two things that are in the 'coil over's' favor are the fine tuning of the ride height and cost at the moment.

                I'm leaning towards the KW/Weitecs purely for that reason. It's a matter of ~30 pounds between the two, so I guess I should be asking is there much difference between the shock rates of the two. Which is softer?

                  Glad he liked them, shame it was not enough to keep the mod bug away...

                    They're not as harsh as I feared, though I certainly can't charge over speed humps like I used to. I imagine that the increased rebound damping would have as much to do with this as the increased compression damping and spring rate.

                      What do you guys think of FK Highsport coileys?
                      They quite cheap, very good brand.

                          I think its the best buy to be honest.

                            eBay...

                            Did you just check the online shipping options, or did you actually call them or email them to see if they were willing to ship to SA? The reason I ask is that most sites don't list that they ship to Australia either, but one you ring or email them, you will find that most will ship outside of Europe.

                            Try Awesome GTI, or performance3000... Also, DPM Performance... All these companies ship to Australia as I asked them, so I don't see why they wouldn't ship to South Africa...

                              Funny enough, I've decided to hold off on the coilovers for now. I fitted the whiteline RSB last week and it's fantastic, fixed most of the things I didn't like. I've decided to purchase the LCA bushes next week and I'm considering jumping onto the rear unibrace wagon as well as a front strut brace to further tighten things up.

                              I know a general rule is to stiffen up the opposite end of the driving wheels (FWD/stiffen rear, RWD/stiffen front)
                              Is the unibrace the best way to go about this? I've seen setups similar to a front strut brace on the rear between the towers.. an adjustable tubular bar or crossbrace. might be a cheaper option.

                                Stiffening the chassis isn't the same as stiffening the suspension - it actually allows the suspension to work better so it may well increase grip.
                                Funnily enough, having fitted the B12 kit, I no longer feel any need for a rear anti-roll bar.
