The recirculation function on the unit does make a bit of noise, but that's pretty par for the course in all the cars I've driven. People with the whine - do you leave your recirculation on too, or are you using the A/C without the recirculation?
Be very very careful running it on recirc mode. I did that, after last summer it smelt absolutley foul and VW said it was my own fault for using Recirc. I complained to the owner of the dealer and they cleaned it out, but basically service guy told me the recirc function is designed to make foul smells. It seems stupid that VW would make a function that turn your car into a swamp, but hey you can't argue with the "experts".

I basically only run my A/C in the summer (I do it once a week now to keep the seals moist), and basically never on recirc mode unless I'm behind a sootmeister, or in a tunnel.

I've had bad experiences with fatigue and recirc mode, especially on longer trips.
