  • Anyone know this car

    Greeting folks

I've been lurking in the background for a while now, and have learned a lot from all your posts, so let me start off by saying: "thanks very much."

I'm looking at getting a polo gti as a runabout/city car, and the idea of an APR modded vehicle looks like my best option for all round comfort, fun and budget.

I'm just wondering if anyone in the club is familiar with the following car:

2006 VOLKSWAGEN POLO GTI 9N MY2006 Private Cars For Sale in WA - carsales.com.au

It looks like it might have once belonged to a member on here given the paintjob and mods. It has APR tune, APR catback, APR intake and (it looks like) upgraded suspension (can anyone confirm this from the pics - looks like some sort of Bilstein suspension to me??).

The current owner claims to have only had it about a year (selling due to baby on the way), and doesn't seem to know much about its history or what has or has not been installed on the car.

It looks like a reasonable buy, but I'm a bit dubious of buying something where the history is unknown.

Any thoughts/help/insight would be much appreciated

    Cheers Ross

Do you mean delirious or dubious?? Judging by the mods, and how clean the car is, I think she has more than a passing idea about cars. It's not like is a GS Lancer with 14in mags, a Unit sticker, and a cannon....

...are you looking at the same pictures I am? I'm seeing horrid oversized wheels and a stupid lowering job.

Regardless, I'd be checking the usuals (logbook stamps, receipts for work, color of the oil, engine and gearbox, general wear and tear etc.) and making my mind up on those.

I didn't know 17in wheels were so big... My 18in Twists must be positively monstrous then... I'm not sure about the poor lowering job either... Bilstein Shocks and springs show that some thought has gone into lowering the car too.... It's not like they're cut king springs...

I think you're bonkers for 18's, I can't imagine your ride quality and grip is all that great with next to no sidewall flex.

It handles well, but the mags have been scraped on one side of the car. No distortion evident but I'd be tossing them.

If they are a former member as Stuwey reckons (thanks Stuwey!), anyone remember who owned the car previously - might be able to find a build thread etc etc

Ride quality is actually pretty good. I can honestly say that its better than the stock 16's. I have had 16's, 17's, and now 18's on it now.... And the grip is awesome!! Being that the wheels are 8 inches wide helps a fair bit too...

                      Ross,
                      How did it drive?
The FIN wheels are not the most expensive, and John Fowler can get a replacement set. I'd be more concerned about the tyres. Mine has "Solar" and "Barnum" tyres and they are crap. Will replace them soon with some Yokos.
From the pics it looks OK for $15k.

Is that to fit another size or just because they are scraped? If the latter, you will be able to find someone who can refinish them to the point where previous damage is just about undetectable.

They are scraped across all the wheel spokes on the RHs, front and back. I reckon this little 'dub might have had a somewhat hard life under the current owner(s). It's a great drive though - perky, surprisingly quick, no looseness in the steering, good turn-in etc

Still tossing up whether to buy a newer model and mod it myself...at least I'd know the history and be sure that the job was done right then

G'day Kev! Wondered how long it'd be before you found me on here

                          cheers Ross

I think you will be lucky to find a Polo GTI that hasn't been driven hard at some point or another... Good luck though... Personal advice... The only time you are going to know for sure that a car has not been raped within an inch of it's life is if you buy it new yourself...

If you were looking at a newer model, the new Polo is just about the worst combination you could find... 1.4TSI, DSG, and looks like the Elephant Man and Maverick spawned a child, that was that set on fire, then run over repeatedly by a Mk6 Adidas special... Then again, you could just buy a car with slightly scuffed wheels and go from there...

I suppose one of the main problems with the stock Polo setup is how soft the suspension is, which the 18's would reduce somewhat. Either way, not my choice in rims but if they float your boat then that's all that matters (I mean, I drive a French hatch... there is nothing more laughable than that )
