That's odd. When I was doing my 'due diligence' prior to buying my GTI, it's true that AAMI didn't want to insure me (redirecting me to Just Car - who are underwritten by them anyway), but GIO and NRMA didn't have a problem insuring me, and the last time I looked, I'm still under 25 Policy is definitely under my name - so there's no sleight of hand going on here.

I'd developed a nice big NCB as a result of having no accidents under the policy on the family car, and with no prior traffic offenses, I was about as insurable as an U25 male gets.

The result? NRMA Fully Comprehensive, for a little over $900. Your premium will be affected by where you live, and whether the car is garaged - as well as your driving record (or lack of one if you've been hiding as an "occasional driver" on a policy until now). That $1800 bill is certainly scary! That's almost as bad as a WRX premium, and they're about as notorious as they come.

There's one caveat on this, I just realised a few days ago...Driver Training courses (not performance ones, just the standard Finlays/Murcotts etc courses) aren't covered by the NRMA comprehensive policy. I'll ring again to make sure, since the lady behind the counter wasn't 100% sure, but it doesn't look that way.

Last but not least: Welcome to VWWatercooled, MissVuks.

I pay about 2.3k for my insurance Its under my name, 18yo and male...

On another note, is private sale also the best way if I were to sell my GTI?

i actually just did an online quote as myself as the owner driver with NRMA, got quote $1200 for full comprehensive insurance. much better than the 2200 i got quoted previously. its only 300 more than the barina.. im a clean driver, never been pulled over or gotten any form of a ticket ever, and no accidents touch wood.. im pretty sure i have 65% ncb last time i spoke with my insurance provider..

$1200 is pretty decent with NRMA? i also heard of my big brother that just car and young n cool are rather apprehensive when paying out a claim if youve had an accident and that theyl do anything to prove it was your fault. is that true??

Welcome MissVuks. This situation may not last long (GTI pedals just seem to suck your right foot down ... extra gravity or something like that ...)

You're making the right choice (Polo GTI) and will never regret it. I've had mine for nearly 18 months now and it's still hard to wipe that off my face whenever I drive it.

Updated, I did manage to get an estimate for NRMA just now, but it will cost me 2.2k a year, and I'm 23...

Actually, just occurred to me, what should the insured value for the car be?

That's what I thought. Although by default when obtaining the quote for NRMA, the amount was significantly less.

I bought mine for $31,600 on road with leather and metalic paint back in Feb 06.

Insurance at the time of purchase for 23yr old male with NRMA was $1,120 full comp with a agreed value of $35000.

Renewal was $1,190 full comp agreed value $32,500.

A tip with using agreed or market value.

With NRMA, and a couple of other insurers, if your car is written off or stolen in the first 2 years of its life (i think you have to have bought it new), they will replace the car with a brand new one.

This means that there is no point going with agreed value, which costs more. For those insurers that do this, which I think include NRMA and GIO, go market value for the first 2 years. NRMA quoted me $1600 for agreed value at purchase price, but $1280 for market value.

After two years though, I would personally go back to agreed value so you dont have arguments with your insurer should the unfortunate ever happen.

Also worth getting your NCB protected if you haven't been eligible for it yet. NRMA adds about $100 to the cost, others such as Justcar only about $35.

NRMA told me my premium would be the same with market or agreed value. I also have the choice of getting a pay out or the same car new if its written off or stolen in the first 2 years.

                        Insurance - hit them up

You might be able to insure it under someone else's name (eg. your parents) but if you're involved in an accident and you were driving, they don't cover you?
I'm 23y/o had my previous car (01 Barina) insured with AAMI for approx 3 years before I traded it in to get my GTI - before I made the deal (not that I was going to change my mind ) I gave AAMI a call to see how much insurance would be and they said that they were definately not meant to insure the Polo GTI to anyone under 25y/o (I even told them that it was chipped) but because I was a rating one with them they said that they would ensure it for me (on the condition that I was the only person under 25 driving the vehicle but I managed to talk them round into letting my 24 y/o bf be in on it also)
Here's the funny part - I thought I would be up for at least $1-2k but it was only about $65 dearer than what I was paying for my barina! Ridiculous when the power step up is so obvious. So my suggestion is to hit them up, also if your parents have been insured with one company for a while that helps you out with that company. Hope you get your GTI soon - goodluck...

                          Hey All,

To add some info re AAMI and the GTI.

I recently picked up my Polo and wanted to add my GF to the policy (not that she'll be driving it often, but just in case... hehehe).

The AAMI rep said they had recently changed their policy in regards to turbo cars and under 25s. Had I wanted to add her (she's 23) to the policy a few months ago they would not have been able to do so but now it wasn't an issue.

She does have max NCB and full comp. insurance for her own vehicle through AAMI so not sure if that made any difference. The cost of the policy with her on it was only a few extra dollars as well.

My sugestion would be start advertising now for the Barina at a ridiculously high price!!! If you have plenty of time to kill what's the harm if it doesn't sell straight up! If you get an awesome price for it then that's another step closer to getting your car

i took a polo gti for a test drive today and it blew me away!! Such a smooth drive, was soooo impressed.

my dad made me test drive another car, so i did just to make him happy. We went and looked at the ford fiesta xr4 and it just doesnt compare. the front dash of the ford was plastic looking, the radio looked cheap. it was a nice drive (and it is 2k cheaper) but just sittin in the polo and the whole "experience" it just rips the ford to shreds.

buttttt for those who like their fords this would be a great car for them, cos there was power and grunt but the polo just kicks ass

im happy my dad now understands that i like the polo and its the car i want. so both of us are happy!
