Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

On a slightly different note driving my bros Clio Sport 197 F1 thing (bloody long name!) it made me realise how hard VW have made it for us! I have to push the Polo pretty damn hard to get those times out of it, but the good thing is the car feels progressive. The more you push it, the more it slides. You kinda have to ring it's neck.

The Clio on the other hand is a different beast. I was pushing it pretty hard also, but I wasn't having to drive it anywhere near as aggressively. To get the times out of it was easy, but when you got near or over the limit it would bit hard. I think with a bit more practice the Clio would be at least half a second up on the Polo...

The Brembos on the Clio were in another league to the Polo too....

Looks like the track did dry up a bit towards the end of the day, but as you note the drainage at Wakefield isn't ideal and the river of water that runs across the track between turns 1 and 2 is always interesting. The last really wet day I drove at Wakefield I ended up burying the Polo in the kitty litter at the end of the straight after hitting that river. Sounds like the 1:16s you drove at the end of the day were pretty quick given the conditions.

By contrast it was drizzling at Eastern Creek pretty much all day, with a consistantly slick and greasy circuit as a result. I was there for a Burrows training day which doesn't allow timing and as my Performance Box is in the Polo back at the workshop anyway I couldn't get any lap times - but needless to say they wouldn't have been anything special even with AWD and a new set of tyres.

My Polo should be back sometime next week with replaced turbo and some new goodies bolted on, so let us know if you do decide to head up for a December track day and I'll try to join you.

One of my good customers ran wakefield on the weekend, Polo GTI 9N, APR K04 & supporting mods - 2 drivers, one clocked 1.10.5, the other clocked 1.10.0.

Those are awesome times, I am floored actually!

              Hoyhoy.

A big thanks to Guy (APR) for making my Little Blue Girl as good as she is.
I ask Guy for ideas & delivery of things & this is what happens.
The power hasn't been changed for a couple of years since doing a KO4 with APR tuning.
Just recently Guy went to the trouble to get me a plated LSD from overseas,
this helped a lot towards the result that my SON & myself achieved.
Guy doesn't know it yet that I need his help with a new brake set up, but I'm sure he will help again.
The brake set up at the moment is with the original rotors & calipers from new (58,000 km on the clock).

For those of you that are speculative of the times.

My Sons run only consisted of 3 laps with a blown turbo gasket, then blew a tyre.

P.S. The target at Wakefield Park for the 9N Polo is now sub 1:10.0 (9's) chaps.

                Challenge accepted!

Haven't had a dry weather run in my Polo since installing the K04, but those times really have thrown down the gauntlet and I've got a lot to make up from my 1:12.7 to be in that ballpark. If the weather gods bestow sunshine on us for the Wakefield day swingn is organising I'll do my very best to try to even come close to that time.

Great to see what the Polo can do in the hands of capable drivers as you and your son obviously are.

Heres my run, not the best lines I took that day.

                      Hoyhoy.

Heres a quicker one my Son done in his Nissan.
                      Much better line than mine.

Damn, you guys know how to drive...

Stock rotors and pads? I can't comprehend how you managed to do this... with Stock setup my brakes were gone after 2 laps. With 312mm and OEM pads they were cooked after 3 laps.

                        What rubber are you running?

O.K. standard set up, but tuned up, slotted the originals, DS3000 pads, MBF fluid, backing plates cut down & ducted cooling, 3" at the front down to 2" hitting the dics.
Now not good enough for this pace.

Eddy, Just out of curiosity, are you using factory wheels (offset 43) with 15mm spacers?

                                Thanks.
