Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • K04 - Which one and how much?

Don't tell my wallet, but as I've done most of the other required mods, thought I should see how much a K04 is.

So, I believe the K04-001 is the one used in conjunction with the APR tune?
Can a different K04 be used with the APR tune?

I'm seeing K04's for about 250 - 300 pounds, which would be somewhere around $600 landed, obviously I'd need to make sure they are legit, is there something I'm missing here?

Is installing a new turbo a big job (for a mechanic)?

As I know, the K04-001 is the most "popular", because it's a bolt-on replacement of the K03s.

Fitting the turbo isn't that hard, you need to take the right driveshaft out to make it much easier to access.

Don't kid yourself into thinking it's a cheap upgrade, unless you can do it yourself.

I thought APR had K04 software that was free/cheap. It'll work on the std software but certainly won't be running at it's best.

To truely get the most out of it, you need to emulate hardware of the K04 equipped factory cars, like the 8L S3.

pogo55 has one, I reckon APR fitted it in Brisbane.

Beware of Chinese turbo's, can not Guarantee the result with those - buy a genuine Borg Warner KKK K04.

Talk to your nearest APR dealer about software upgrade!

Have you looked at the APR site

I think if you supply all your hardware, turbo etc they charge you about $700 for the software

It you buy the turbo etc from them the software is free

Do you need a new manofild or does it bolt straight on

Can someone tell me how much power you would get over the K03 with the same mods, exhaust etc 40hp??
            MODS- TOO MANY

I was at a dyno day where a polo had DP, Intercooler, APR K04 with software and it pulled 169 HP atw on a Dynomatics dyno in non shoot out mode. Hope this helps!

That's what it made on the day though. It has standard MAF and injectors.

there is only about 10kw atw and 20NM in a K04 over a worked K03 car ..... APR's Red Polo was doing around 150kw atw where some K03 Polo's have been doing 140kw atw with all the stuff you need for the K04 anyway ....

Don't bother ... its not worth the extra $$$ you'll be spending ...

Looks like they have modified hiflow turbos that bolt to standard manifold

Same old issue that you reach a point where you are paying thousands of dollars for a few kWs. For a road car or even weekend cruiser, I just can't see the point in a K04, maybe on a race track, but once again the issue of traction in a Polo is the limiting thing, hard to get all those wild horses to the ground.

Dyno's are also only good to compare a stock car on the same dyno, the same day.
