I knew the resident price guide would chime in soon enough Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware they were so expensive!
She is happy with the still current GTI so if I can organise a test drive this weekend, she'd happily take a 3dr manual one of them and I'm sure the dealer will look after me!

I'm not a fan of buying an outgoing model but in this case... "happy wife (or in my case gf) = happy life"

Based on the existing Polo GTI @ $26,990 + $1,500 for 5 door (which it will apparently be available in ONLY), and +$2500 for DSG (again, standard), plus the regular $1995 dealer delivery + onroads, and it will cost around $34,750 - on the road.
To get it at $28k drive away you'd need to get a 19.4% discount - which is not going to happen - ESPECIALLY on a car at this price point.

Even with the CURRENT Polo GTI you'd need to get a 8.6% discount to get it for $28k drive away - so it's not reasonable to expect you'll be able to do so for a car with an extra 2 doors and DSG as standard.
I'm with coreying on this one . Even if it comes in at 34,750 ORP I'll stump up the cash for one. With those performance figures nothing in that price bracket will touch it for bang ,chuckability and quality.
APR Chip it and it'll be like biting into a chilli.

Yeah - that's my view - nothing will match it for the price. Carsales went so far as to say that the next cheapest competition to the new Polo GTI would be the Mini Cooper S, so since that is $39,900 (plus onroads) that VW would price the new Polo GTI around that. Of course, since Volkswagen already have the Golf GTI around that price, it's one of the most bone-headed articles I've seen! hehe.

Problem with the Mini Cooper S is that it should be priced at around the 35-36K ORP mark . The plastics used in the interior are rubbish and the Mickey Mouse dials are getting pretty passe these days . It's engine is no real cracker either and the torque steer without the optional LSD is hideous .
By the time you option up the MCS even without leather its at 48K. Bloody ridculous price. But that's BMW for you.

anyone know what the score is with the placement of the intercooler?

the fog light housings being quite large, the ducting would be quite a run-around if it were to start at the main front grille then work its way 1.5ft to either side.

anyone seen a turbo'd one in the flesh? where's the intercooler, and how small/big?

Oh god how dog ugly is the interior. I would have to hang myself if that was my daily drive.

I saw an interesting quote in Ausmotive, funny that no other sources have the GTI coming in manual -

Australian customers will be able to get their hands on the all new Polo early next month after its local launch. In other good news for Polo fans AUSmotive has learned that the new Polo GTI should be available with a 6-speed manual transmission, in addition to a 7-speed DSG.

                from - http://www.ausmotive.com/2010/04/06/...year-2010.html
                2008 VW POLO GTi

Hopefully Lima has word on the manual from a reliable source and not just some rumour started by some doofus misquoting information on some forums! hehe

That'd be a good start to reducing the price!

Had a chat with my dealer today so taking the missus down on the weekend to check out a current GTI they have on the showroom floor. We'll test a diesel as well and give it a fair evaluation. From the discussion, the new GTI will be too far away but a new Polo diesel could work pending the evaluation.

dave..... hmmmm. im going to tread very lightly when i say this.

be open minded when looking at the polo tdi (77kw specifically). diesels arent rockets by any means, and especially not ANY polo tdi...

however, if the 2010 polos difference in capabilities are anything like their predecessors, should braking be similar, and should both be on coilovers, a chipped polo tdi will do a rather convincing job of sticking to a CHIPPED polo gti in the twisties.

there're a couple of people in victoria who can attest to that.

                      cheers,

                      scotty

Wasn't going to write it off based purely on performance, it's more if we can live with the diesel in general.

                          lol no worries.

no problems what so ever with my 1.9 tdi. in fact, i quite like being able to get 2 round trips to mt buller from st. kilda on a single vented tank.

only problem is it takes a while to warm up properly (like, 10 clicks if you want to do things right before thrashing it)

The missus does lots of short trips for work so I'm not sure there will be any economy benefits.

Scott, no quibbles with diesels, and we should all "love the one we're with", but in terms of a spirited, sporting drive there are significant differences in power delivery between a TDI and a TSI. Diesels are great cruisers and also for lumbering around town, but the powerband is just so narrow compared to a TSI.

timbo, i can respect the differences for sure. in treading carefully, i meant to say that im taking myself out of the equation.

i dont really want to say anything too suggestive, nor to make polo gti boys who've done the hard yards in tems of mods, upset or anything, as they're a brilliant bit of kit no doubt.

i'm merely saying that there are people who can confirm that braking and suspension either being similar, or not too much of a debilitating factor on either car, a chipped tdi can do a decent job of sticking to a chipped gti in the twisties. i'll drop it though, just to be safe, lol.

                                cheers
