Friggin' pain isn't it? At least with the Golf MkIV, VW say that 2004 onward had the smaller ring gear yet they can't give a definite changeover for the Polo. I'm almost resigned to having my Polo pulled down before ordering a TBD which means it'd be out of action for more than a month!

    • Yeah i know at peloquin they ask for the vin when ordering your diff, it might be worth the exercise with that, emailing the vin for a request for quote, mention you have a Polo. They probably use the same parts system as me seeing as independents dont get vin active Etka anymore after VW shut us down. i subscribe to Germany now ftw. Anyway where im heading is the 02R in the Polo has 02j bellhousing and 02r outer gear casing. Ik try not to muddle things up here as im thinking as i type. If they request the vin something must tell them what diam ring gear you have if it were a Golf, ive looked and cant see it but there isnt a magic program so after seeing so many they must ave something that tells them. So that being the case and if they do in fact use a similar program as i use then whats to stop them checking the Polo? its all vin active. I have a shredded peloquin that i could measure, there is only 3 gearbox codes for the 02R in the Gti , HWY, JDB and GVZ. Ill check what the casing is i have to see if it sheds light, not sure if it will but i would be trying the above with Peloquin, even if you are going Wavetrac. i reckon im going Wavetrac in my 6N, seems the go.
Cheers and sorry for the ramble

      • I just had a look on the Peloquin site and saw something that wasn't there before on the 113mm ring gear version of the 02J diff.
This differential will be used in the 02S SEAT LEON and 02R Polo from this production date 01 10 03 this
date along with letters is found on top of trans. near shift cable connects to trans.
Plus will fit in the 2005 up 0A4 transaxle.
But it's all rather confusing when you read some of the preceding text which states
        Some times
the Vin number won't work or trans. code number as VW has yet come up with a
way to tell the public which ring gear they have.

Would your comments also apply to my TDi, Jimmy?

Sorry for cluttering up your thread, VWindahouse

        • No problem mate, this info will benefit all of us. Quick question on the date range from Peloquin - are they saying all Polo's with the O2R gearbox after 01 10 03 have a 113mm ring gear? Or is this an American site and the date is really 01 03 10

I thought the Polo 9n3 GTI was only released in 2005 OS and 2006 here in Australia. So neither really make sense or am I missing something?

          • The Spams only swap the month and day round.

So instead of Ist October 2003 it could be 10th January 2003

I see it everyday at work with Americans servicing Qantas and V Australia at LAX.

They don't realise the rest of the world is different.......

            Gavin

PS apologies if you are American and do know the difference

            • Nice work Anthony.
Was that increase over the standard intercooler or a Forge one?

Ah that's right, haven't had enough caffeine yet this morning Either way 2003 on wards doesn't make sense either as both size ring gears have been reported.

Thanks Clay! Yeah the only change was the intercooler from Forge to SEAT.

I've also got the 31's. They don't have the grip or feedback of the continentals. If you plan on using them for track and street, I'd suggest you keep looking. For the price they are good, I paid $100 a corner, and can't really fault them, but you turn up the heat, you quickly find the limit. At QR doing sprints, I lost 1sec per lap going from conti's to Kumho, and it felt it, lacking the feel and ability to balance on the car on/just beyond the limit. I'd buy them again, though would have a semi slick for track days.

                              • Apparently the Dunlop Sp Sport Maxx TT's are available in that size and come fairly highly reccomended.
Otherwise you could get Dunlop Direzza DZ101 or the Federal 595.

In semi slicks there are the Federal 595RSR which look pretty good.
These should be available from Option1Garage.
