Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. You can't really see where it draws cold air from.... But it sure looks good!

yeah its a whole bunch of japanese crap about how they believe that we already know the benefits of increasing air to the engine, that the car manufacturers didnt fit their cars with this kit, but luckily for us "motor field" corporation has. lastly, that they recommend this kit for all tuned cars.

p.s. if anyone wants some translation (rough, ive been out of it for a while) done from japanese pages, let me know, as i prob be able to give you a rough idea as to whats going on/ postage costs to which countries/ whats included in the kits etc......

I have often wondered why its been said that the battery needs to be removed or replaced with a smaller one. This is how I thought it would look. I'm guessing that the piping goes underneath the battery and into that corner of the fender or light. Can't see how else they could route it conventionally. But its not really ideal having the intake so low to the ground.
Interesting though but I still find the K&N panel filter does an awesome job of freeing up the air intake.

Have a look at your car. There is no space for that pipe to go anywhere. I suspect it is a 5cm long pipe that ends still behind the battery.

I will be happy to be proven wrong as it is something I'd consider but am doubtful.

ive just found a real good idea, to have those honey comeb grilles for the front of the polo.(bare with me guys as a mechanic i make a good butcher) if you were to remove the oem air box and relocate the windscreen wiper bottle. could you not run the the piping inbetween the battery and the chassie, and run it down behind the lights where the left hand fog light is?

I know Kai has made a custom CAI under the battery to somewhere but not sure how he did it. Not having looked under the car yet I'm not sure how you'd do it but I'm sure there would be a way. This BMC option is interesting, definately worth a look.
            Cheers,

I think (seen it while fitting the honeycomb grills) there is something else in the way as well. Powersteering pump or something?

You can get them from Autobarn for about $500. The CDA is a generic kit. The only thing that changes is the inlet/outlet size (not sure what the Polo has). Has anyone measured it?
                  Cheers,

Someone buy it & do a report on it. We installed CDA's on about 6 Polo's & be stuffed if we could ever get cold air to that location (Maybe they do something different)

I think that it was binnyvo who took a snap of his new cda, and i think he had it fed right up into the square box-thingy that many people have been cutting the flap out of when installing the Seat 150 air intake.

Would that be cold air? Something's telling me that there's alot more to CAI's than meets the eye.

Thats exacly where I thought you would route it; where the stock air intake connects just under the front of bonnet. Can someone elaborate?

so would anything be wrong with rerouting it around the battery on the far side to link up to where the stock ait intake usualy sits?,......maybe thats what mozzy's idea was ,.....not sure?......just brain storming.

It is possible to run the pipe around the battery but not on a stock battery. I looked into this for a while to try and figure out the best way to go about it. The kit shown on that website has a small hose that goes no-where. You can clearly see the black hose is not more than about 10 - 15 cm long. That hose that BMC put in their filter kits does not stretch out, its actually quite stiff.

I did this upgrade and had to remove the window washer bottle to feed the hose next to the spot light. My set up is not complete, I had to cut a few corners and rush the final touches as I was running out of time and needed the car back on the road.

I can not really feel any performance increase but the air intake temp is better than with stock filter and Seat intake. I use ScanGuageII to monitor the air intake temp and when cruising the intake temp is around 2deg warmer than the ambient, as shown on the factory dash (I have seen it out just 1 deg from ambient). Previously it would not get within 4 deg of ambient temp. The intake temp also appears not to fluctuate as much as it did before. Overall I am happy with the outcome it makes a nice induction noise, not too loud, and I also think there is some performance gain if the intake temperature is lower even if I cant really feel it.
