Do you think mods make car unreliable

I was thinking that my gearbox is still ok because i have not done engine mods and this has helped it last or is vw quality hit and miss are some strong and some weak?

Not sure but im guessing you will have to change your username soon, if the mod's don't get ya the km's will.

Well ... I guess there's only one way to find out ... bite the bullet and try a mod (start small ... gloss 'B'-pillars shouldn't make it too unreliable.)

With all the mods I have, I now make over 170kw compared to the stock 110kw and it has not made it any more unreliable at all.

I have not had a single warranty claim in almost 3 years and hope to keep it that way.

All the mods have done is turn a mildly entertaining little hatch into a real pleasure to drive.

Change some stuff and then find out when i trade in or sell that i get less cash because its not original they may say oh that,s been changed did you smash it and have to change it.

^ Keep all original parts then return to stock should you feel the need to sell up. In the end, we do our cars up for ourselves and the joy we get from the firmer suspension, the nicer looking wheels or the high quality stereo, and rarely is resale high on the list of priorities (unless it's a classic or collectable car).

So true. When modifying a car you can't bring re sale into the equation, put simply in *most* cases you will never get back what you put into a car and it's likely that people will assume when buying a modified car that it's been flogged, meaning it will be harder to sell. All this means it can be a good idea to keep the original parts to swap out at sale time.

As for quality being hit and miss, for every post of an issue with a car there are hundreds and hundreds of owners who don't post saying all is good... If they did it would make for a very boring forum experience

This I guess will be more apparently when our cars hit past 150000km, and more than 10 years old...

I liked to leave the car looking stock, thus only thing I have done visible is
1) tinting
2) H&R lowering

All other mods are not easily seen or not visible.

This is one reason why I decided not to go ahead with down pipe at this stage...

It depends on many factors.

Say you only change cosmetic items I highly doubt it should be unreliable.

On the other hand if its riced up with big wheels and lower suspension it can possibly throw wheel alignment/balance off and wear out other components quicker if not done correctly.

As for chipping/remapping I'm unsure I've heard good and bad; some say it increases all round performance and economy others have had some major components go after modification.

Really in the end it depends on budget and how professionally proper you want your car modified.

For myself I like my cars stock
I do like looking at what other members have done as it shows the true potential of the vehicle and opens that option up later in life.

I would suggest that unless the mods you do are REALLY stupid, then they arent going to worsen the resale value. At worse, all the $ you spent moddifying will get you no extra resale value over a standard one. But in reality, as long as you do it with class, then new owners are willing to pay a bit extra for a modded one (like me).

Someone once criticised my $ on mods stating it would be harder to sell afterwards, and my reply was that I do the mods for me, not for the next guy. if I was worried so much about the next guy, I'd buy a white camry automatic (and maybe even get him to tick the options boxes for me)

but in all seriousness.....did anyone here ever presume to make up SOME money on the mods they've invested in, on resale?

my example, once i get it done, which will not COMPARE to any of you guys.... i know this forum houses die-hards who spend ALOT.....

me:

car= 23k

GIAC map = 1.2k

DP= 400au

tyres= @800aud (one set, bf goodrich g-force sport, nice n sticky)

wheels= tenzo dc6 black @ 160usd before shipping/ import etc....

suspension= koni STR.T kit- should suit me fine..... im not a good driver.... roughly 1500aud)

but it dont really matter when e.g. life is boring, then you get on the run-up to the S-bend under the bridge on dandenong rd, no other cars around, and just floor it.

the money is worth it.

if you wanted to save money, it'd be better to just be dead. then you can save everything you've got.

Yeah ... whaddya gonna do ... take it with you? I don't think so.

I've lost money on standard cars, modded cars, motorbikes and boats ... transport COSTS ... get used to it.
