The Golf GTI is actually $11,500 dearer, not $15,000 when you compare base models, 3 door manual with no options ticked.

The extra cash is easy to see.

Bigger car, bigger brakes, climate control, CD stacker, bigger wheels/tyres, bigger, more powerful engine, real centre console, auto wipers/lights, and maybe a few other things I don't know about.

You would also instantly see where the extra cash goes as soon as you drive one.

The real issue here, though, is the title given to this thread by the OP. It's like Max Mosley on his liesure time - just asking to be whipped by everyone in the room

You may recall the thread about the Golf GTI being a mid-life crisis car - it went pretty much parallel with this one. When caught in sage mode, even those taking the mickey (like me) will admit that there's nothing wrong with a Polo GTI.....

Stock on stock? Not a chance. The only thing a Polo GTI driver could do is admire the rear-end design of the XR5 Focus.

Though the Focus is at the slower end of its class with figures like 6.5/14.7 (dead even with the new Clio 197) it can easily dispatch a standard GTI Polo.

Oh and to the person who said I quote "figures from obscure overseas publications and not rear world," the publications I quote have more readers worldwide then Australia has people. They're hardly obscure.

Define figures from the "real world." The street can skew figures so much from what is reality that its not worth even mentioning anything that happens on the street whatsoever.

          • Do we have to keep quoting 0-100 times ? At the end of the day a car is as quick as the driver and more importantly is limited by the conditions (and laws) at the time. As for the 6.5s times you quote ... the "average" driver isn't going to get it under 7s from reviews I've read.

Anyway the XR5 is a ****box ugly car in my opinion. which I assume is why you see very few around, most people will buy a Golf GTI if they have that money to spend or want 4 doors.

The average person shouldn't have a problem getting below 7-sec 0-100 in an XR5.

Aussie mags just fail at acceleration times.

How am I trying to make the Polo GTI look bad that saying that it (110kW/220Nm/1190kg) is slower then a Focus XR5 Turbo (166kW/320Nm/1370kg)?

                    That makes no sense?

I could afford the Polo GTI, there were other reasons I didn't buy it when I bought my TDI. I'll be out of the TDI soon enough, but seriously, I dgaf how good the GTI Polo is or how good you think it is, I'm more replying to silly posts that don't make sense correcting with fact, regardless of car.

No need to apologise, surprised it took this long to straighten him out.

$10k in price... A couple doors... You would hope it's not as good.

Chipped... much closer story performance wise - but not the others.

                          • i keep hearing this thing about "drivers in the ausside mags get rubbish times". the drivers of these mags are better drivers than any of us and could kill us on a 0-100 race. the times in these mags are more real life to our conditions.... not these low irrelevant times that european race drivers are getting on a 3 degrees celcius morning at 15,000 feet above sea level.

most of us live well below that height and in a much more hot and humid climate, so these o/s mags times do not mean anything to us.

                            • By the way Kai, if you actually payed attention to what I say, I've never said the Diesel is way better or even mentioned it! The TDI is worse in every possible way and I'll be the first to say that. I don't pay the Polo GTI out at all, just point out that it can't do the impossible when people say it can.

I'll point you to several threads where I pay my Polo TDI out for being crap though, if you like.

I'll copy a few standing start acceleration times from Motor PCOTY 2004 that I have on DVD. Then you make the judge how good they actually are when you see how badly they drive the cars.

I'll bet that most people on this forum with a smidgen of drag racing experience who genuinely like to know how to drive their car properly would kick the crap out of motoring journo's in any acceleration; or driving test, for that matter.

Motoring journo's are just that, journalists. Journalists first and foremost, everything else second.
