  • Creaks and Rattles fixes

Hey Watercooled just thought i would share one. I have been looking at a few Polos with creaks and rattles. One i had creaking in the rear cabin area sounding like an old bed spring especially when the body has to flex going up driveways. After chasing it for a while discovered it was a body panel creak where the inner sill meet the outer along with the floor pan. So 3 panels together sort of thing. This reqd an old fashioned body alignment and then where there was gaps sprayed with TAC2. All good, sorry no piccies but the next one ive had recently was a knocking type noise around the drivers door. You have to remove the door card and inner membrane to gain access to the door lock mechanism ( very similar to Mk4 Golf) You also have to remove the outer door lock. Then you cut a piece of foam or rubber to the shape of the door lock which acts as a cushion. Dub already have some sort of foam there but was non existent when the lock was removed . Rebuild and test. Quiete as a mouse. Basic piccies below

There are other common ones we all know about but these 2 were a bit different.
    Cheers

Thanks for that. Although I cannot say have either of those problems on my Polo, I do have one squeak like noise from the front left area, not sure if its from door or dash. The wierd thing is that it only really happens when its cold outside.

If you know of others it would be good if you could do a write up so we can put it in the FAQ section.

i have creaking in my seat, but i honestly think that when they designed the polo, they might not have had people in the triple-digits club at the top of their list.... lol

(that was a useless post, i know......)

Hmm, my sunroof has began to rattle/creak a little bit recently. Any idea how to fix it? It rattles whenever it's open, either slide or tilt, but it i put a bit of upward pressure on it with my finger, the rattle stops. Any ideas?

I had rattling noise at the rear right due to dampers top mount and got it fixed. Now, there's another one at the front left door. Bugger!

I had both suspension mounts changed under warranty at around 15000km. The rattles stopped for about 5000km, and now it's back again.

My dash creaks near the air vent where it meets the driver's side door. VW couldn't be bothered to fix it and blamed it on my aftermarket headunit (wtf). I put it down to dashboard alignment which was casing the door card to rub against the dash during cornering (or hitting a bump).

Rather than tearing everything out (including my hair) to move the dash half an mm I went to the art supplies shop, bought a sheet of self adhesive grey felt and cut out two narrow strips, stuck them on the underside of the lip of the door card where it meets the dash. They're barely visible even with the door open.

              Problem solved for $2.99.

Driving over a rough road yesterday, the whole dash sounded terribly creaky. Took off the trim panels (fuse box covers for L and R) to have a look.

Interestingly, there is a big round block of foam to stop noises from the door wiring loom stuffed in a body hole still in its plastic bag! Don't think it was the problem but I'm sure the foam wasn't designed to stay in the stiff crinkly plastic bag.

The fuse box covers are hard plastic and probably inclined to creak with movement. They do rattle a bit when I rap them. The rest of the under dash seems to be fairly well treated for creaks and rattles though the lower left corner of the dash seems unfixed to anything - didn't see any obvious missing bolts.

Went for a drive with the fuse box covers off and couldn't detect anything. (Hard to find a rattly rough road when you need one.) So have put some adhesive foam around the edge to see if that will fix it.

Heat shield over exhaust had slightly loose fixings causing a tinny vibration - easily fixed.

This post about Phaeton steering mentions and has photos of the VW Audi Squeak and Rattle kit. Interesting at least for the contents of the kit. Not too hard too find similar things in hardware stores.

Using the knuckle rap test, had found a few suspect spots on the dash and front of door trims that could generate noise on rough roads. Have applied a bit more adhesive foam. Now I just need to find a really rough textured road to test on.

I wonder if anyone can help me...driving on a roughish road yestorday, and again today, caused a tingling sound coming from the dash of my Jetta, and sounded like the instrument panel area,or slightly to the left of it.
Also have a squeek coming from the front left area of the dash.
If it was not for all the rattles and squeeks, the Jetta would be a perfect car.
                            Very annoying.
My Parents 2001 Corolla Ascent sedan has NEVER had 1 rattle or squeek.

(Technically this is a Polo thread I think. But I had a look for a similar thread on Golf V/Jetta and it said to just search for your problem.)

If you're a keen DIYer, then see if you can find some nice persons posting of interior workshop manual bits like there is for Polo. Otherwise ERWIN could be your friend. (Best option for the keen DIYer seems to be to buy a day's ERWIN access and print everything you can get.) Bentley US manuals on disc sound good but have had mixed reviews compared to paper.

Should be feasible to track down any noise and fix - patience, time, and systematic approach required. Otherwise a dealer under warranty or a VW specialist......

(Reading about squeaks and rattles on the web, it seems lots of cars have problems and lots of dealers are not good at fixing them.)
