  • 77TSI manual - good buy?

Am looking at a 2010 77TSI Comfortline this weekend, and speaking with my VW mechanic he said "problems with the turbo petrol". But I haven't seen anything about recalls or engine problems to do with turbos on any user forums.
Anyone had servicing problems with theirs?
    Thanks

My recollection is that there were some issues with timing chains / tensioners on this engine and if I recall correctly, some on here had this issue occur more than once. I may stand corrected though.

    Cheers

Ah yes, he said something about the timing chain coming free when the tensioner fails.
          Thanks for the insight.

131,000km on my 77TSI. The timing chain failed at 110,000km and VW paid half- I was very lucky, $1200 repair in total. Note I caught it before it skipped teeth.

Otherwise a very reliable engine with no other common problems.

              I have a Manual 77tsi MY13.5

No timing chain issues and am at 86,000km

Still have the rattling fuel lines and wastegate rattle

              But they are easily ignored..

I believe the rectified the timing chain issues post MY12

I stand to be corrected though.

Took the car dealer's Polo for a test run and it is a nice machine. I especially like the acceleration when the turbo kicks in - amazing for a 1.2 litre. The only thing stopping a purchase is the wide centre console butting up against my leg. Are there any "slim" versions of the console?

Does the MY10 have bluetooth? If so then the ugly not altogether reliable touch adapter is more of an issue.

I glued a small piece of neoprene rubber on the edge of the console, so it doesnt hurt my leg there. Works a treat

The biggest issue as said by many is the timing chain tensioner failure which is of course catastrophic. There was a recall for this, I bought my 77tsi manual with the work done only 10k prior to my purchase #win.

The waste gate actuator can also rattle, there was also a recall for this from memory, but I know that there are shims made to fix the issue, it's really only a nuisance, and only when revving while stationary.

Lastly the fuel line can rattle, this is incredibly irritating but very trivial. Can be fixed with some foam, sounds like the engine is knocking but it's only the fuel line.

I guess the timing chain issues are why the 6C update with 81TSI now have reverted to timing belt like on the Mark7 Golfs. From what I've read it is a completely different engine with different bore/stroke, induction/exhaust swapped sides of head and not just a spec change

                            Yes
There are vast difference to the 81 from the older 77TSi, but there is also a new 77 version basically the same as the 81 as well as a low output (maybe 63kW IIRC)
Things like the exhaust manifold are cast into the head, it is a 4 valve motor, old was 2 valve
