the VW service manager just called again and said its still faulty. Tomorrow morning they will replace the computer and let me know some time tomorrow if it is fixed.

You're much more patient than I am, by now I would be having a polite but firm meeting with the Dealer Principal. At minimum, I'd have a loan car with an insurance excess comparable to my own and I'd be asking for replacement of the car if it is not rectified by a deadline of your choosing.
You definitely need to escalate this above the Service Department level.

After getting in contact with the head of Customer Experience at VW, via LinkedIn, I received a call from VW Customer service at long last. They've arranged a free loan car with no insurance excess.
Also, VW South Yarra just called and even after replacing the computer it's still faulty.

VW update: they found a broken intake manifold sensor wire then repaired it, then noticed the water pump was noisy so they're going to put on a new water pump, and they noticed a shudder on takeoff so they're going to fit new clutches to the transmission. Will be ready to pick up on Friday.
The car is now at VW Glen Waverey to check all the work that South Yarra did.
When I took it to my independent mechanic last week for a service he discovered HEAPS of loose bolts and missing nuts, a massive exhaust leak, loads of oil under the sump and in the intake, misaligned suspension and cradle, and the suspension was cable tied to the brake lines - and had already pulled one out of its clip.
Thats beyond horrible, its unsafe. Someone (VWA who should claim from the dealership) should be compensating you for that, if you hadnt had it checked you could have just driven it and been killed. mental.
Im really gutted for you that they did such shoddy work, this has been a nightmare for sure.
