The starter motors in stop-start cars are designed for many many more starts than a non stop start far, as are the other parts. It's a bigger unit and starts the car much more quickly. If yours is misbehaving then take it to the dealer and get them to fix it.

If you're in heavy traffic, just press the disable stop start button above the radio. It's not rocket surgery. [emoji1]

One massive fail that my wife picked up this week on her first drive home from work in peak hour in her new Polo GTI is that the AC blows hot air around the whole way home, because she's driving in peak hour and the compressor isn't turning... stopped in traffic in the baking QLD sun with hot air blowing all over you...

We both want stop start permanently disabled. I've always thought it was a stupid idea, now it's been confirmed to me...

Get the dealer to do it, or if they won't play ball get someone with VCDS to do it for you.

Ive found 95% of the time when the AC is on that stop/start automatically is disabled.

That is correct, I have noticed this also. It is only when you have driven for a considerable amount of time and the car is fairly cool, that it may stop but after a few seconds it will restart again to keep the AC cold.

I would have thought that this would be the case too, however this has not been our experience so far. Stop Start seems to operate all the time irrespective of these conditions. The other day the car had been parked in the sun on a 32 degree day all day, my wife got in to drive home and from the very first time she stopped until she got home, stop-start was active the whole time. The AC system was up against it from the start given that the interior air temp was probably up near 40 degrees, couple that with heat gain from the 3pm sun and the fact that the compressor spent 20% of its time not working, meant she got home very sweaty! (yes she could have wound the windows down, but anyone here who's married knows full well that you don't try and make a rational point with an irrational and cranky wife).

I'd like to think VW engineers wouldn't have made such a critical error, but given recent events vis-a-vis emissions claims etc, I am not so sure... Maybe they needed that extra poofteenth of a percent lower fuel consumption to meet some ridiculous emissions standard somewhere... (sorry, just me being cynical and somewhat sarcastic...)

That aside, the Polo seems to be a great little car. Not as exciting to drive as the Golf, but an excellent and zippy city car.

Well my 2012 model Passat is now getting a new starter motor because of a start/stop failure.

Exhibit A of why start/stop is a silly idea. Just get it permanently disabled.

I think so. The dealership can do it, but they might not want to for whatever reason. Otherwise, find someone with VCDS and ask them to do it for you.
I believe it's a fairly straightforward thing to do. See: http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...eak-94276.html

^^^^^ OR, if you don't access to a VCDS cable (or your friendly VW dealer acts obstreperously - which is not uncommon) and the Polo has a SS on/off switch on the centre console (like the mk7) and you are handy with a soldering iron, then you could build yourself an Automatic SS disabling switch!

I did, now SS on my mk7 automatically goes into the disable position every time I turn-on the ignition (5 seconds after ignition switch-on). I have complete freedom to leave SS disabled throughout the ride, or I can engage/re-disengage SS at any time in the trip. Much better than my VCDS tweak because there is no tell-tale indicator on the MFD whenever the car comes to a stop.

Works real well and it's easy to make and to install (even if I say so myself). Details HERE

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.
