  • 2015 GTI Start stop issue?

Hi all I've been having issues with the start stop in the car.

The engine stops like usual but when i put my foot back on the clutch it doesn't start the car, the starter is turning over the engine but fails to start it.... then i have to turn the car off and then it starts like normal. Its happened 3 times now.... very frustrating when waiting at lights.

Anyone heard of this as a problem?

Might have to go back to the dealer....

Go back to the dealer and get them to disable start stop entirely. The fuel economy benefits aren't enough to outweigh the extra wear on the engine, starter and battery IMO.

Is the start stop feature really that bad for the car?

It is a real pain when you are crawling in peak hour traffic, stop-start-stop-start every couple of metres. Hate to think what it is doing to the starter motor, battery etc just to make it "save" 1 litre a year or something

Yeah it's quite bad in my opinion. Fluctuating engine temperatures, dramatically increased wear on the starter, battery and engine as a whole. Just not good for it. The cost of an early battery replacement (which will happen) will immediately outweigh the tiny fuel savings.

I've been stuck on bloody lights a few times when it's time to start. So each time I get on the car I turn off the darn thing

I trust that the VW engineers did a good job designing the stop start features and the hardware to support it. The same guys that schooled the self titled #1 EPA in the world

Just like how they did such a commendable job on the 1.4 TwinCharger, or the DQ200 DSG, or the 1.2 TSI timing chains, or the... Hmm. List goes on.

I have a 1.4 twin charger engine in a Golf Mk6, it has been perfect, absolutely perfect, for over 4 years, no problems of any kind.
Obviously it has a DSG, again been perfect for over 4 years, no problems of any kind.

It's very easy to pick any model of car, search the world and find hundreds/thousands of people with issues. The fact is for every one reporting problems with any particular model, where most times it's the drivers fault, compared to the millions who have had no problems that we hear nothing from. The tiny whinging minority has a much louder voice than the much larger silent majority.

                        Cheers

I know they can be perfectly reliable Gary, I was just making a bit of a joke. Nonetheless, there's a reason VW are pretty quickly removing that engine from their entire range.

I suspect it (the discontinuance of the twin charger version of the 1.4 litre engine) has got more to do with the improvements in the turbo charger implementation on the 1.4 litre engine that has negated the need for the supercharger. The bonus for VW is that it's much cheaper to manufacture and somewhat less complex to service, which can't be overlooked in these days of fixed price servicing.
