Super stoked to find this thread, I've just purchased a Polo 2011 for my partner, and have discovered it has the dreaded timing chain issue. Its with VW right now. They were initially resistant due to the vehicle being S/H and out of warranty but it only has 69,000klms and is in mint condition, and has a good service history although not with VW.
I explained the "known issue" and "fit for purpose ACCC rules and also verified I was the owner of 4 VW vehicles. I'm still waiting to hear from them, but the vehicle is not driveable due to the condition of the chain and I guess its partially disassembled and waiting on parts and verification of warranty.
I'll report back what happens, but it is ridiculous that the service department immediately resorted to this is whats wrong and this is what you will need to pay to fix it, when a timing chain clearly should last the life of the engine and the ignorant service advisor assumed it was changed at 110,000klms like a belt.
