Quite interested in this thread as it sounds as if I am experiencing the same thing.
In April this year I took ownership of a Polo 81tsi Manual. Not a thing out of place with it. At around 5,000km I started noticing quite a loud rattle on start-up and it predominantly occurs when it's a colder morning or night.
So sounds identical to what you all described.
Does the 81tsi engine differ in any way that may mean that it's a different issue?
Or is it the same engine?

The 81TSI is a 16 valve engine (4 valves per cylinder) while the old 77TSI was an 8 valve engine (2 valves per cylinder) and I'm fairly sure while the 77 was timing chain driven, the new 81 is timing belt driven so the rattle must be coming from somewhere else. I may certainly be wrong but that's my understanding anyway.
    Alex.

Just bought 2011 polo tsi with 110ks on the clock, everything feels as tight as a drum but seem to have the infamous death rattle sometimes on cold start sometimes when warm.
The test drive was from Gympie to Cairns , nearly 1600ks drove like a dream. Do I need to be concerned, really appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Thanks for the info regarding the engines. I'd also thought that I had heard the 81tsi is belt driven but wasn't sure. I'll take it down to the dealership and hope that I can replicate the sound in front of them.

Hey pontiff, I still get the rattle but its very random. So I'm afraid if I take it down they might not hear it.

Del, you definitely need to be concerned. Get it replaced before it takes your engine out with it.

I noticed the rattle on cold start when I bought the car, price was right regardless and I purchased it. About a month (2000km) later I started it up one morning and it was making an almighty racket. Turned it off, called VW, tried again next morning- same noise. Had it towed to VW. Very lucky not to have skipped teeth.

I'll book mine in again anyway as it's obviously not right.. Which leads me to ask.. does the fix even work or was something missed?

let us know how you go. Just push for no out of pocket.. I'm going to try for mine again under the fact that they said they would warrant the work they did for 2 years, so i'm going to be running with 'your fix has not worked, try again please'

                    Thanks trive, pontiff,
Heard back from Vw today, they are going to sort everything out.
Reckon chain has stretched. Big relief.

My polo has been making the sound for some time. Always been told its meant to be like that and not to worry. Got my mechanic to look over it. Timing chain is buggered. He called his mate at vw service and because he has done alot of business with them they have agreed to 100% parts 70% labour. They did add that it was a 143 diagnostic fee. So all up 244. Timing chain will be changed guide rails also. I believe the pre tensioner s also. They are a bit anowed under atm, so monday they should be able to fix it. Fingers crossed no serious damage has occured to other compenents of the engine. I will keep you guys posted after I get my car back.

Can't understand why this hasn't been a factory recall???
they know there's a major problem, about time they sorted it.

Probably taking the punt, if 25% fail, and they can get 50% of those to pay for it (at least some if not all) they are ahead

Okay... VW are replacing the timing chain, sprocket and associated parts 'again' no questions asked under the 2 year warranty from the original repair.

The question I have for them though is that VWA only have it listed as the tensioner being changed and not the chain, but Burwin say that they are 'doing the chain again' so I think there is a slight disconnect there. I suspect the chain is being done for the first time as i cant see a 'new' chain stretching again in 20k?

Anyway.. once I have got to the bottom of it , I will report back.

2 days before It went back in the rattle was so bad (still short time wise) I was contemplating leaving the car until i had to take it to burwin as it sounded quite destructive.

That worked out well. Did they cover the cost for diagnostics too?

Okay... Just reporting back. Took my car back to Burwin and sure enough, the timing chain had stretched...

They replaced it all again under the VW parts warranty without issue but that basically means that the new chain has stretched in 21,000 kms to the point of the tensioner not being able to tension it any more.

I checked the paperwork from both repairs and the same part number chain was used so unless the chain was faulty, that's not a good sign.

I'll be interested to see if it comes back again, doesn't bode well...
