From the above can we assume that the supercharger is being dropped in place of a larger turbo (the latter required to compensate for loss of supercharger)? i.e how do they propose to maintain/slightly increase power output. One would hope the revised engine has a fix for the oil consumption issues.

Max kw figures only sell cars, they dont make them go fast. At the moment the supercharger would be having most impact at lower rpm and less of an impact at peak power which would be sourced mostly from the turbo. So you could take out the supercharger and it would have little if any effect on the peak kW. It will lose some bottom end so compensate the 0-100 time by adding a few kw peak. That can easily done with a tune along with all kinds of internal development work. Even if its faster on paper it might not be as nice to drive. Just supposing. Or maybe its an entirely different 1.4 litre.

Everywhere you search there is mixed opinions on what VW will do so really until it's officially announced its a matter of "he said, she said". I just hope the Polo R makes can make it to Australia2006 GTI Polo - Big Turbo Build - Louis19's Build Thread

Given the twin-charger has been dropped from the Golf 7 line-up, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say it'll be dropped from the Polo too.
I know the 1.8 has been touted around but I'm tipping a tuned version of the 1.4 TSI found in the Golf Highline.MY18 Golf 7.5R - Ecotune Stage 1

Sure the current one is twin-charged but the supercharger really only adds mid range, not outright power.
The trick will be getting a 1.4 turbo not to produce the power to make it drivable (not laggy) and reliable.
Of course I could be wrong. Hey, there is a first time for everythingMY18 Golf 7.5R - Ecotune Stage 1
