Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Next generation Polo GTI to retain current motor?

    G'day Guys

Just wondering if anyone has the inside word on the next generation Polo GTI which is I understand due for release in 2015.

I'm looking for a fast little hatch to go with my MK7 R but can wait up to 12 mths before I really need this 2nd car. The current Polo GTI on paper and when it works seems to be a cracker and should fit the bill. However, I'm well aware of the oil consumption issues and other gremlins which have made the Polo GTI a millstone for some (issues with the 7 speed DSG as well?). The big question is will they retain the high performance and high oil consumption 1.4l supercharged engine or (hopefully, surely) they switch to a 1.8L VAG turbo motor? Should this be the case I'll be very interested. In a perfect world they also pick up the dsg box from the Golf diesels/GTI/R.

    Any thoughts/info appreciated.

I thought this had been discussed else where but oh well. Wouldn't get your hopes up for a new engine. I'm pretty sure it was confirmed that the new face lifted Polo GTI will have a revised power output for the 1.4 twin charge unit - from 138kw to 147 I'm pretty sure. Torque will remain the same @250nm as will the 7SP dq200 DSG - although you would hope there are some updates to the production run to make it more reliable.

Besides that I wouldn't expect any drastic chages to the platform until it completely changes to the MQB in many years.

^ Thx, well that scrubs the Polo from the list. Might stump up the extra cash for a Golf GTI...

I'd buy a Focus ST...better deals to be had, a lot more fun to drive and has the soft plastic feel of the GTi...with leather Recaro seats as standard...cannot say no to that, especially at $35-38k

I reckon it will ditch the twin charger. It will mean that the Polo's engine range is all the most current engine family.
1.8L engine (Skoda Octavia etc) the most likely.

When your competitors (208 GTI, Fiesta ST and RS200) are all giving buyers 1.6L engines why bring a 1.4L to a fight

^ I hope you're right (given the issues with oil consumption its surely a no brainer!). The 1.8l turbo is the obvious choice.

Yes and No...If the smaller engine can give similar power outputs, it is better to stick with a smaller engine. It will be lighter and provide better better front end balance and handling.

I think Volkswagen AG is trying to phase-out the twin-charger engine in general. It would explain why it's no longer available on any new-generation models that use the MQB. Even though the new Polo GTI won't be based on the MQB, I still think they'll phase it out. You only really see the twin-charger engine on the older generation models at the moment (Jetta, Tiguan, etc.)

I'd say it will most likely be the 1.8T which is usually 132kW as standard. They'll probably tune it up to 140ish like what Nomad said.

I could be completely wrong and they may retain the twin-charger but I have a feeling they may move it on. I guess it may depend on whether they can fit the 1.8T on the current platform.

Not sure how an engine with a turbo and a supercharger can be as light as possible.

Isn't it the reason for the relocation of the battery to the rear? Even the Fabia RS hatch has 20kg of ballast on the rear for this reason. weight distribution

I'm sure this has somthing to do with it but at the same time I'm pretty sure the Diesel engine weighs more than the GTI engine and it still has the battery in the front - I guess they aren't going for 100% sportiness though.

Also the fabia has 20kg ballast? I have heard of this before but I find it had to believe that a car maker would weigh down a car just for balance. Surely you would add extra weight with a spoiler (or whatever) not just a block of metal sitting in the boot.

Here is the ballast. I'm not unsure it isn't sand-bagging, though I suppose they'd put it all the way across in that case, rather than in one corner.
Now gone.... 2012 Skoda Fabia RS

If you guys haven't researched on the net, the next Polo GTI (updated for 2015) will have the 1.4ltr engine, 141kw and avail in Manual and DSG. It will only be single charged. The Polo GTI will continue to have the 1.4ltr engine, nothing bigger.

I have done quite a bit of googling and can't find information to support your suggestion; although, perhaps my internet skills are lacking. Would you mind pointing me in the direction of the source of your opinion please?

                          Thanks in advance.

Exactly. It's moved around on lhd models to counter the drivers weight as well.
