On average the price of a VW GTI has fallen due to the reliability issues / poor VW PR campaign. It's a normal mid cycle facelift. Just like the Fiesta got facelifted and a new range of engines etc added. If you want decisive look to VW USA.
Retire old normally aspirated motor (2.5L 5 cylinder boat anchor) in Golf/Jetta/Passat replace with the 1.8L turbo engine and a TORQUE converter automatic.
As for Polo GTI resale values. A 2011 pOLO Gti is now 3 yrs old. If you get over 60% resale after 3yrs you are doing well. 60% of 30K is 18K!

The Polo is over 4 years old now so more than time enough to give it a refresh.
