They ha to save face, the 6r has had so many issues that they needed to act decisively.

On average the price of a VW GTI has fallen due to the reliability issues / poor VW PR campaign. I still see the TSI / TDI selling within its depreciation range...the GTI not so much its falling more rapidly.

Fingers crossed there is a delay til December so I can get a good trade in value / private sale price.

It's a normal mid cycle facelift. Just like the Fiesta got facelifted and a new range of engines etc added. Just like the soon to be outgoing Fabia was facelifted a couple of years ago to accept all the new TSI engines.

        DSG still available : Check
Turbo engines still available : check
twincharger engine in GTI : check

If you want decisive look to VW USA.

Retire old normally aspirated motor (2.5L 5 cylinder boat anchor) in Golf/Jetta/Passat replace with the 1.8L turbo engine and a TORQUE converter automatic.

As for Polo GTI resale values. A 2011 pOLO Gti is now 3 yrs old. If you get over 60% resale after 3yrs you are doing well. 60% of 30K is 18K!

Volkswagen Polo TSI R-Line: Geneva 2014 Photo Gallery - Autoblog

Geneva has come and gone - the result is a handsome looking facelifted Polo, extra KW for the GTI and GT, new Golf-sourced centre console and more models than you could poke a stick at (most of which we won't get incl the TSI R-line)

Due here "2nd half 2014" and GTI early 2015

Also, It's much cheaper to standardise things like switchgear, the centre console screen etc, rather than make different stuff for each individual model.

The Polo is over 4 years old now so more than time enough to give it a refresh.

not a fan of the gloss black console or the light coloured seats on the R line. The metallic looking one on the other models is much better. Liking the new steering wheel. Loving the absence of touch adapter.
