Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MDI and iPod's

    Hi All!

New to VW watercooled, so far enjoying reading all the bits and pieces about Polo's

I'm having a problem with my MY13.5 Polo 77TSI's MDI interface with the RCD310.

Intermittently, my iPod (30gb gen 5, I think?) won't register. Sometimes I get the error message "Media Device: Not Functional" other times it's almost like I haven't plugged anything in at all, the screen continues to display AUX, most times, unplugging the iPod and replugged it in does the trick, other times, hard resettting the iPod, unplugging, replugging, turning RCD off and then on, or even turning car off and on (even taking the key out so that the unit turns off) won't work, and I go without an iPod for a trip

An option I didn't explore when buying the Polo
    1. Because nobody offered it to me
    2. I have no idea when it comes to this stuff
Was upgrading to the RCD510 or RNS510, I'm pretty keen on the user friendliness of the 510 unit's but don't need nav, so the RCD seems like a cool option. If anyone can advise on where to get one, some installation places, and what to do with this gosh darn Bluetooth touch adapter, and if upgrading to the RCD510 will affect it in any way?

If anyone has any experience or any tips and tricks I could do to get around my iPod issues or my RCD upgrade query, it would be much appreciated!!

    Thanks!
    Luke.

First question. Are you using the genuine iPod connected or are you plugging your white cable into the USB cable that comes with the MDI?

as for the 510,s they are plug and play. Do a search as there are install guides on here. They are dead easy to put in (Pull of the cover and undo 4 torque screws pull out and unplug at rear).
There is a list of guys with vcds that can do the coding (again search is your friend) if your steering controls don't work. Find one in Sydney and pm them and ask nicely.
To buy a RCD510 search eBay or the for sale section on here. For a RNS 510 try the same or go to www.jku.com.au for a Australian option.

Now to the bluethooth screen, again do a search.

in summary search is your friend.

In answer to your question, I am using the genuine iPod connection, I figured out the day I got it that plugging my white iPod cord into the MDI to USB didn't work, one of my criteria when buying the car was to have a working iPod integration, blasted the poor dealer when it didn't work as he knew very well when he sold me the Polo that I needed another $80 cord...

Thanks so much for your help, I'm going to do some searching now! haha.

I still can't believe how much dealers charge for the cable. I got my genuine plug for $15 of eBay.

i would try resetting the iPod. And checking the software is up to date. I use a 2nd gen touch but I started with a RCD 510 and had to unplug and reconnect it a couple of times to get it to respond. now i have a RNS 510 and have no dramas whatsoever.

Well i'm the idiot for buying from the dealer...

Plugged it into my Mac, all is up to date, reset and restored it, just incase. The iPod works like a dream in my Mothers Suzuki Swift Sport.. So i'm going to presume maybe there's a cord problem here, or the MDI might not support my gen of iPod or maybe the capacity? The dealer seems to know jack all about these sorts of things.

I've done some google-ing and nobody seems to be having the same sort of problem with their iPod's.

I've also found some RCD510's on eBay for approx. $300 (bargain in my opinion!) some of them seem to look different and denote being a genuine Bosch?? any ideas??

$300 is about the norm providing its in good nic. Most of them are pulled out of new cars. Mine is a bosch. There are some Chinese versions out there. Not sure on the differences. Some older ones don't have the 26 pin plug on the rear. So if you want to add a genuine camera or reverse sensors make sure it has that connection.

There are 4 models if I remember correctly.

3 are made by Bosch and 1 by a Chinese company.

The Chinese one has a terrible amp so music sounds crap - so avoid it! It also doesn't have support for the MDI or Bluetooth only AUX. you can tell the difference between the Chinese and the Bosch by the lack of 4 buttons beside the cd slot (it only has 2).

With the bosch ones there is one with AUX, MDI and Bluetooth one with all of the above including Digital radio (euro frequencys only - sadly) and one that has AUX, MDI, Bluetooth and a port for the OPS / reverse parking camera.

I've been reading bits and pieces all afternoon in regards to changing to an RCD.

What I'm aiming for is to have an RCD510 with iPod functionality and still being able to connect my phone via bluetooth for calls n things whilst ditching the Touch Adapter and replacing with a bury system 9 dock, only to charge, and sit there and look pretty.

As a new VW owner, I'm liking the look of all the possibilities

Also figured out in the end why my iPod was being funky connected to MDI.

VW's apparently do not like Macintosh formatted ANYTHING.

Reformatted and re-synced my iPod using a windows PC and everything is absolutely hunky dory!!
