Also dual fuel injection...I'm not too sure about that!

    Somebody is getting ripped off
It's not .4 second slower, that's just the officially quoted time. The general suspicion on Briskoda is that VW have "suggested" to Skoda that they not show up the more expensive model. The weight is also doubtful, or at least measured differently to the VW. One thing is for sure, there is 25kg of weights hiding under the left rear bumper of the Fabia hatch. Some sort of "counter-balancing" or old fashioned sand-bagging? My money is on the latter...

For proof, Australian Motor Magazine tested both of these cars in 2012 Bang for your Buck challenge. The Polo was, from memory, about 3/100 of a second quicker to 100kph. Interestingly, the Fabia was a 1/100 quicker than the Audi A1 Sport.

I don't doubt that there are discrepancies between the times posted for 0-100.

My 1.2tsi is officially quoted at 9.7 secs to 100 (though it has always felt slightly faster)

And go figure Cars guide (or one of the Australian car magazines) tested a manual and got 8.8 secs. Usually DSG is quicker by another .2-.4 secs but been a dry clutch there is a bit of hesitation off the line, but once it's going it makes up for it so I would say 8.8 is achievable for both manual and DSG models.

Interesting that VW wouldn't quote the best number they could get, it makes it sound more impressive and would probably sell better - but then again what is the target audience for the middle of the range...

As for why the 1.2TSI is under-quoted, it may be to stop it stealing sales from the Golf. There's a hierachy going on, I suspect, and all VAG vehicles fit precisely into their brand/model/price niches.

Manufacturers, in this day and age, don't add 25kg of pig iron to a car unless they needed to.... the Fabia RS wagon has not added weight.
It would seem the added weight on the hatch is there to counterbalance the extra weight of the TSI/DSG combo...in the polo they do this by shoving the battery in the boot.

Look on the positive side, it means the Polo R will be about 40K. I also don't get VW/Audis obsession with 5-door cars, especially in ultra sporty models like this. Are you really going to go on the school run in this??

It seems like most Australian consumers are partly to blame, usually moaning about how they want "more" doors and the reluctance in purchasing coupe / 3 door hatches. Boggles my mind.

Not sure how a S1 quattro is comparable with a Focus ST. This should get you to 100km/h up to a second before the Focus.

S1 Quattro is graded as a "city hatch" the Focus ST is considered a "hot hatch". So a city hatch with slightly more power and AWD is worth nearly 15k more than a hot hatch class car that is fairly close in terms of performance with a simple mountune upgrade?

Well if you're the type to throw money at anything shiny, then all I can say is enjoy. Personally I'd buy a Golf R / Focus ST Face lift (if purchasing property yet want an affordable daily hot hatch). I agree the S1 looks nice on paper...but lets be real here its not a practical daily car in my opinion.

                          Focus ST - $36k onr

                          MK7 Golf R - $56-58k ONR

S1 Quattro - possible $54/55? (after on roads, govt charges, greenslip)

Just saying...unless you wish to collect and work on the car...its a horrible depreciating asset to purchase. I'd get the Golf R...

Is the Polo R definite for Australia?

Yes, I am! Or, I would!
There are plenty of other options if I want an IMpractical sports car! Keep the 5 doors coming, I say. (No good reason not to offer the 3 door as well, though, IMHO.)

Unlikely a facelifted Focus ST will go for 36K On road. Current onroad price is 43K in NSW.

The prices the europeans are estimating the for the S1 are around UKP25000 - which is Golf GTI money.
What if it comes on the market at 50K drive away with leather, sat nav, adjustable dampers, HIDS etc etc and can take any of the current crop of Golf GTI, Focus ST, RS265 etc etc.? In fact it could well be faster than the upcoming WRX.
