Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I believe it's intent is to comply with some local laws relating to use and positioning of mobile phones and non-OEM cradles. On delivery, you will get no real benefits besides what is essentially bluetooth control of your phone from the touch adaptor itself. You will not get benefit from the antenna, as you aren't connecting it to your phone.

This was the first thing I disabled, mostly for that reason

I would still be using the phone via the steering controls.
Buying the VW genuine part should save you from having to code it. But when you look at the cost for the aftermarket product and getting it coded by someone in Sydney from the forum, you could end up saving yourself $100. Especially if you're not on an iphone 4 or 5, you can pick them up second hand from people like myself who have succumbed to the upgrade demon.

As for the antenna, I noticed a signal boost on the iPhone 4, but not on the iPhone 5 or 6.

    • Thanks illOgitech, I might think about it for a week or two. So if the iphone was connected to the touch pad will that give me superior signal? I sort of hate the fact it just sits there and is of no use.

Nope. The phone has to be docked in a cradle connected to the mount in the car (which the touch adaptor currently sits on). Connecting the phone to the touch pad via Bluetooth will not alter the phone's signal strength.

          • Since Touch Adapter talks bluetooth with the car, my solution to get it out of my phone's way was to shut it up! I simply killed its bluetooth by removing the antenna inside the unit. And since the car only cares about its wired connectivity to operate properly, all went smooth. This is the cheapest solution I found.

Have a look at my blog post to find out how to get this done. One word of warning: if you've never done soldering/desoldering, you should invest some time learning about it and do some tests.

                • Hi... I might be a bit of a rare case who doesn't mind the touch adapter - but am wondering if there's any information on updating/upgrading it? Change the voice? Change the skin?

Bought one and had it delivered, arrived today. It's a Bury System 9 Genuine.

It actually sits alot nicer than what my iPhone 5 did in the S9 Active Cradle. I like how I can opt to have the charger in or not aswell.

                      • Did you have to recode the telephone through the VCDS to make it work?

                        • If I change the VW screen to the Bury universal adapter, will it just work or do I need to have something recoded?

                          • I'm not sure for recent models, but it used to need a re-code.

                            • Here's my DIY solution to over riding the stupid touch adapter. I created a polycarbonate holder for my phone which slides over the unit itself. Unfortunately, it doesn't benefit from antennae boosting, but at least it eliminates frustration. Given my phone sits in front of the touch adapter I didn't bother with the putting it to sleep business.

Next step will be to upgrade from the RCD310 to an RCD510 (Bosch). If I source one of these, do I also need to get the 9w7 BT adapter?
