The other noteworthy tactic is find an end bay and take your car as close to the outer edge. That leaves the greatest chance that the person next to you has plenty space to open their door, and if they are the lardy type, still get their carcus out without leaving their mark on your car. And this still leaves one side of the car (relatively) risk free.

the thing about your post is that yes, there are PLENTY of people out there who think that just because their car is a ishtbox, they can spank the car doors open however they like etc....

do what i do - look for spots in shopping mall parking lots where there are eight empty parking spaces in a row; dont park in the down-hillest part (because 3unts like to just kick their shopping trolleys away once they're done), never park within 45 degrees downhill of a shopping trolley bay; if you can find a spot (no matter how far away from the mall entrance it may be) that has a pole or a kerb on one side, drive in there / reverse park in there, to give the undoubtable shtcnts who are going to park next to you as much room as possible to punt their doors open like the ufking arsholes they are, etc etc...

it's a war out there. even on a mild day at the local mall, i'll circle 3 times looking for the best (read: most remote) spot....

I asked my mate how he deals with parking his car (he recently got the new mk6 golf gti) and he's said he also thinks about the way each car is parked either nose in or rear in and adjusts his car accordingly (if absolutely no other parking spots available).

If we had James Bond VW's then we wouldn't all have to go through these drastic measures.

it's true! if you're a member of a car forum, then chances are you DO have a clue, and some measure of respect for what is the 2nd most expensive purchase many people will make (their cars).

but MOST people out there dont have a clue - underinflated tyres, washing their cars with the foam brush at the local carwash, "treating" their car every now and then to a (long overdue) service, starting her up and thrashing the crap out of her from cold, driving a camry etc etc. thanks to these people who genuinely dont know how to be a functional motorist, it's not enough for you or i to simply follow the road rules that we learned when applying for our L's.... it's not enough for us to park neatly and considerately in malls any more - we have to assume the worst, that some drunk fckface is going to come along and plough into everything in sight, hence why i always park near a pole / column / kerb, in order to minimise the approach angle that he could enjoy before hitting my car.

if only i had ~$10k cash handy. my car's probably only worth ~$14k now, but i'd love to just get a daily beater - something korean or japanese that i'd detail and take care of, sure, but i wouldnt stress if it had dings in it from a shopping session.

Sounds like a good idea, but before my Polo I had a '91 Civic that I'd owned for 17 years and I still got pissed every time I saw a new dent from a shopping or parking "accident". It's not like I took great care of it, but it was still mine and I had some pride in how it looked and bozos who put scratches in it should still be aware that they are damaging other peoples property regardless of the value.

Exactly. Although i am guilty of previously revving the crap out of my charade from cold (in a rush to get a parking spot at the train station), my whole demeanor has changed after buying this car. The majority in my experience speed and tailgate and it's a pain but what can you do. As long as it doesn't hit our beloved belongings then i couldn't give a cr@p what they do to their ride.

It would be nice to have a car that's cheaper (personally i'd go straight for the honda's) but i dunno, i know i'm just being biased but it doesn't have the same feel.
