Volkswagen Polo R spied | News | Auto Express

A while ago, I said the Polo R likely to have 1.6TSI, same as the Polo WRC, and a lot of "really knowledgeable" people in this section said, NEVER ....... well, the 1.6TSI Polo R is closer than what you'd think..... 155kw and maybe AWD

Love to say, I told you so .....

and BTW if this lands in Australia I'm buying one

Will be popular if it ends up being AWD! Glad they are moving away from the twin charge setups in favour of variable geometry turbos

I could be wrong but I thought the R was just aesthetic upgrades, like the Tourag R. Too much rumours and speculation. I guess it is all part of marketing the brand.
What a pocket rocket it would be to have 155kw and AWD.

The R-Line is aesthetic add ons.
The R version is power plant and AWD usually.

Very interesting. Could consider this if it comes in a manual.

I highly doubt this is the R, more likely a mid-life engine update for the gti, most likely a de-tuned 1.6 that is going in the Audi S1. Why do I think this? The brake package is identical to the current GTI and the rear suspension looks to still run the same setup. The polo r would run the same AWD setup as the S1 which would be fundamentally the same as the Mk4 R32's haldex setup which requires independent rear suspension.

I personally would like an R out there, it means I can upgrade the brakes without an engineers certificate on the gti

I cant see how any journo or observer can see that there is a 1.6L under the hood... and why would VW R&D engineers have a dodgey handycam setup on the dash as opposed to a gopro or similiar?

on a side note, check out this from ABT Polo to WRC (artist impression)

Plus have you ever seen a Vehicle Engineer in a green camo singlet?

Not a green camo singlet but definatley shorts and thongs

I doubt this is an R prototype, but it is interesting seeing the lead running out of the hatch, down under the car......

Have a closer look at the rear suspension and wheel arches and you will see it is definately not a stock GTI ..... this is in the vein of all prototypes and Autoexpress are rarely incorrect in their spottings and I bet you they have other inside info into what is in there .....

I doubt AWD, but will love it if it comes with it.

By the time this is released or even available here it will most likely be 2013. Long way off yet.

and is likely to replace the 1.8-litre TSI engine in the VW line-up which is currently one of the oldest and most inefficient engines
It is? I thought it was only a recent addition to the Audi/VW range (Passat, Audi A4)
And why would it need 155kw if you wanted "efficiency"?

Autoexpress, like usual, are pulling something out of thin air.

This could just be an AWD version of the polo under test. Much like the Audi A1 AWD.

do we need AWD, and the extra weight it implies, in a car in this segment?

or would it be nice to stop the whole "yup, let's make a fcking hatchback weigh ONE POINT SIX TONNES (RS3)", and work on getting the cars lighter and more communicative with the driver?
