  • Ugh, got off the phone from Gold Coast VW for the Polos 1st year service today.

He called the resonator delete an illegal modification and could potentially void my warranty, using back pressure as an excuse.
    Good luck proving that.

Needless to say I dont think I'll be getting my next service there.

    • HAHAHAHA YEP PISS THAT DEALER OFF!

What a joke that is! if you look at the inside of the resonator you will see its a 100% straight through hot dog which is why a resi delete will not give you any performance gains.

By replacing it with a straight pipe it doesn't change anything. I would say removing the rear exhaust would effect back pressure more but even then it would be less back pressure and would breathe slightly better.

In a nut shell the guys are full of sh*t. I have retrofitted xenons, fog lights, rear delete, you name it and my service guys don't lift an eyebrow

Not on the GTI it's not, it's an actual muffler, the same as the rear. In defense of the dealership, it is actually an illegal modification in regards to emissions but with these cars pumping as much NO into the atmosphere as they do they would fail regardless and as for noise, the dB count wouldn't be much higher than stock.

In criticism of the dealership flog now ( Gold Cost Volkswagen ) hopefully this turns up if someone searches from the dealership. Back pressure in a forced induction engine, especially a supercharged engine is BAD. The manufacturers control it to an extent as a source of output restriction and faster turbo spooling but in this engine especially, as little back pressure as possible should be the goal. Back pressure can also cause turbine blades to stall and cause fluttering and that is a great way to destroy a turbo.

          • Gavs, they also noted it as an illegal modification on my invoice, then then tried to tell it'd cost $2800 to bring back to spec. Can you think of any actual law this violates?

Either way, I wouldn't mind upgrading to a better exhaust system and stay on the safe side. HP's looks like the best option since their is properly test and conforms to all the regulations. Having their HQ in Brisbane helps too.

            • Ahh yes forgot the GTI has a different setup. I'm pretty sure its still a straight though resonator but its much larger and triangle shaped. I still don't see how a muffler can keep emissions down...(except for noise obviously)

I know thats what a cat converter is for but not the mufflers (unless the reduction of emissions is a by product of slowing down the air and allowing it to cool)

I don't think it would be breaking noise regulations either, i know mine is within spec with my rear removed.

haha funny story that - the testing criteria for that means that my exhaust cannot be any higher than 86db @ 4000rpm, 1 meter from the car. My car is actually louder at 2000rpm than 4000rpm and actually passes, except if i push it hard and make it fart...

If you were really concerned why not just weld the resonator back on, I'm sure its a lot cheaper than $2800. This is the way i designed my custom exhaust. Its all clamped so incase i do have a problem i can just come home, un bolt and I'm back to original spec

              • i know this is not the place for this but

That dealer ship is just killing us VW fans,

they should welcome us fans and build a relation ship up with the fans, as we the people that are the best free advertising for there dealerships and the VW brand. i am not saying sign write the car just be nice to us.

i remember as a child sitting in a VW work shop and a worked Golf GTI Rumbled in to the workshop and from that day, all i wanted was a GTI when i grew up.

Saying all that there are the nice VW dealers out there we just have to find them and stick with them.

i just ordered one of this for the back of the car it should be cool
now my post is ok for the thread haha EBay VW motor sport

Same as the insides of the rear, just like mine was.

Jake, yep, it's noise emissions related and the test requires 3 different setups for proper compliance in an area that has to be a specific concrete shape with wind speed not above a certain level (the test can truly only be performed outside or in a sound absorbing booth) without a certain level of noise reflection and with less than another amount of ambien noise. One of the test has to be done with the vehicle in motion with the engine under a specified load.

This is why whenever I see someone in a noisy garage with a cheap dB meter trying to do a reading, I raise an eyebrow.

In regards to readerr0r's price, that's probably for a full front pipe assembly. By law, any workshop that works on a defective vehicle must report it to the owner. If they are a certified roadworthy certifier, they have the right to call the authorities to have the vehicle deemed unroadworthy. But, they must be able to prove it is unroadworthy to do that.

                      • Haha testing db using an iphone works ok for me XD.

I wasn't looking for a specific measurement of db but rather if it was significantly louder than the stock setup which is isn't by much so its all good for the most part.
