Super easy. Remove grab handle trim, unplug, swap switches. 5min job.

Already had to do mine after I took it apart wrong the first time to plastidip the trims, pulled the switch in half instead of taking it out. Lost a tiny spring and had to get a new switch.
Bought the new switch and replaced it sitting out the front of the dealer.

turns out they are not proper three piece... well, they are but they are welded around the seam, not just silicon stuff... so will refurbish these a bit... hopefully have them on for VITS in late April... sell them on and find something else (which i may have already found if the guy is willing to sell)

          • I've had an eventful few days.

Yesterday I had VW install the springs (30mm front and back).

They wouldn't install my new 17 inch alloys as they weren't OEM. So me and a friend put them on ourselves.

Then this morning I was driving to work. Took off at some traffic lights and felt the car swerve a bit, and then felt a crunch and looked out of the left to see my rear wheel roll out onto the road ahead of me.

Wheel had completely come off. I got the car jacked up and put it back on with five new bolts. But am TERRIFIED about the other three, even though I've tightened them and they look sweet. . . .well. . . .as sweet as that other one came before it flew off and nearly killed me! Very lucky boy.

            • Did you use the right bolts? Did you correctly torque the bolts or just tighten the hell out of them? Did you use a rattle gun?

Last night I tightened them as hard as I could. And then some!

I tightened them all after sorting them this morning again.

I just took it out in the dark there during a quiet time and did some speed and some reasonably sharp corners and have retightened them again. (Not that they needed much).

The bolts came with the wheels so they should be fine

I'm scared about driving to work tomorrow lol but hopefully it's fine. I'll see how tight they are tomorrow when I get to work.

                • Yeah, they might have come with the wheels but it doesn't mean they're any good! Also you probably ruined the bolts and/or the threads in the hub by over torquing them if that's how you tightened them. 120Nm is the torque for a vw wheel bolt, which should be pretty easy to undo with the standard issue wheel wrench. You didn't say if the bolts had sheared or just undone themselves either....

Yeah I could take these wheels back off without a special tool by just pulling really hard with the wrench that comes in the boot.

The one bolt that I found looked fine....

Have you ever heard of this happening? I'm very lucky and feel blessed that A) I was going very slowly. And B) it was the passenger side (and the tyre didn't cause an accident).

Quite interesting, I have always tightened up the bolts on all my cars by hand (as tight as I could get them) and they have never come off - or even come loose and I put my wheels under a fair bit of stress.

Did you remember to tighten the wheel nuts in a "star" pattern to properly align the wheel to the hub. Also for all 5 bolts to come out...what the hell, I would be going back to the VW bolts ASAP.

Your a very lucky man it was on the rear!

Also VW instaled aftermarket springs but won't install aftermarket rims. I'm surprised they would do anything at all but I guess this is why they don't touch aftermarket rims. Just think about how much crap they would be in if you died as a result.

The VW springs are official. A collaboration between Eibach and VW and in the official Accessories handbook for the 6R.

Bad idea there mate. With alloy wheels you only need to nip them up with the standard wrench.

Don't ever listen to what mainstream wheel shops tell you either.

                          • I tighten mine to 100 with the torque wrench, then go to 120Nm. It's surprisingly not a lot of force. On a 450mm breaker bar it's only about 26kg pressure. The secret is in getting an even pressure all the way round.

To the OP: It really sounds like the seats of the nuts you received aren't compatible with the seat on the wheel. The threads are clean & not excessively lubricated?

Also, I assume you are using hub rings of the correct size?

Can you tell me what they are? PM me if you prefer.

My new wheels have been ordered...now the long wait begins. Shame I won't have them for that event in April you speak of.

                              • I lost a wheel on the return road at Adelaide international raceway a few years back. Lucky I didnt lose it at the 400m mark. Never underestimate your own stupidity. I figure with mine I put the wheels on and nipped up the bolts, then dropped it on the ground and missed out tightening one wheel... went racing. Surprisingly I found all but one bolt within about 50 metres.
