Cold Air Intake - Advice

Has anyone looked at changing the intake yet? It looks very restrictive. I can't find anything online that has been developed. I don't know how confident I would feel trying to make a custom one.

Anyone have any advice?

I would give it a few months mate, i reckon HKS and a few other Intake brands will start developing for 1.2-1.8 litre European cars.

For such a nice car i wouldn't like to play with fire and make a custom one...but we are human if you want to give it a shot, go for it

i thought of buying a pod and just whack it on a right angle piece to aim it at the grill. then make a box to hide it

hey guys, this is a topic that interests me.

if anyone's done some reading in the diesels section, you might have come across the ''let the tinkering begin/ continue/ get serious!" threads by forum member greg roles. even though it's a diesel, many of the things he's doing does apply to all cars. one of his first priorities was to optimise the air flow setup, as the stock setup was simply too restrictive. regardless of where the turbos are on what kind of engine, i think that minimizing bends, and increasing air flow, must be a priority.

i went nuts with my graphic artist skills tonight. as far as i remember from my test drive of the pog tsi 1.2T, this is what i remember the engine bay looking like:



however inaccurate that may be, i DO remember looking into the engine bay and immediately thinking that there's 270 degrees of bends between the front grille and the intake, that simply dont need to be there.

which prompted me to think that this might be a good solution (especially if you could get a good paper media pod filter like an AEM or an A'pexi):



the only thing that would prevent one from going out and doing this setup (because it would be easy to diy, and cheap), would be the last little hose leading into the intake- it looks like all hoses/ clips/ intake mouths are built for one another, i may be wrong, but i wouldnt want to undo the last little pipe leading into the intake, only to find that the only kind of hose that will fit in there/ clip into position, is a vw oem part....

p.s. if any of you are wondering why my photos are so crap, i've used a combo of a website building program + a screen capture widget, and i got careless because its midnight and i've just spent 6 hours detailing someone elses car, haha

I noticed the main inlet from the grille is very limiting.

This is with the pipe removed:

This area in red is where the intake pipe sits, the photos didn't turn out the best but that is plastic there, not straight in from the grille, the air inlet is underneith.

And back in place, as you can see it sits over the plastic, and the gap below it is where the air comes in from the grille:



I would think having a setup similar to what Buller_Scott has drawn would make a huge difference.

They tucked the intake up to the grille and above that flap area to stop any chance of water or stones/other junk from getting into the intake.
Not much space to do much, I imagine that even trying to fit a pod fliter would be difficult due to the space contrainsts? How much room is there?
Also, that pipe into the turbo inlet is tiny! It looks like a small radiator hose!

Cool! Still looks like it has a few bends... Noticeable difference? How much did it cost? Where did you buy it from? Was it custom or actually made to fit into the 1.2 tsi?

Yes that's my car. Better pick up noticeably from mid-high end. Cost me 400+SGD . Got it from apdrive. Mine was the first polo to be fitted with itg locally so you can say that it's custom fitted.
