  • Front Dash / Firewall Rattle - fixed for now

I had this annoying rattle coming from somewhere in front of the dash, behind the steering wheel, and wasn't sure whether it was inside the cabin or inside the engine bay. Of course it only happened intermittently and only then with my foot on the brake and it in drive.

That is until this week, when it kept making the noise whilst in park, jumping out the car at a carpark I traced the noise to inside the engine bay, and discovered these two pipes going down into a metal cavity, just behind the round radiator expansion tank (ball). I fund they were raised and didn't seem 'fixed' via any clips. Pushing them down into the cavity stopped the rattle. If it stays 'stopped' I'm going to push a piece of foam into the cavity to hold them tightly in place.

    Picture of cavity and pipes...

      • Yes I have a Polo with DSG The Dealer has done lots of work. After 15 Months the DSG was replaced. VW Australia doesn't give a Rat's about Customer Service. It is COMPLETELY MISSING Should have bought a Hyundai At least they work This CRAPPY Bloody Blue Polo isn't worth a Pinch of the Proverbial ....!

---------- Post added at 11:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:39 PM ----------

Your'e very lucky. I took my BRAND NEW Polo back the next day with Transmission Problems. Was assured that it would be fixed at the First Service....it WASN'T! Have had lots done by so-called dealership at Liverpool.
Brake Relays REPLACED Temperature Sensors REPLACED Megatronics Unit REPLACED DSG Unit REPLACED
Pull up at lights with Foot on Brake Pedal. When moving off Bloody Blue Polo SHUDDERS.....sometimes losing power then rolling back
Have been BANNED from so-called dealership by dealer-principal as I've UPSET one too many people. My reaction to this was
"....IF YOU had LISTENED and FIXED the Car in the FIRST PLACE....I wouldn't have had to COMPLAIN, Sunshine....."
VW has threatened to VOID the WARRANTY as I dared to go to a NON VW DEALER. At least Camden GTI at Campbelltown know
what they are DOING. VW Australia and the dealer at Liverpool HAVEN'T the VAGUEST CLUE AT ALL. Am really surprised that
they know it is a VW at all. Have been driving for 50 Years ++. This Bloody Polo is ".....The Lemon of the Year....." as far as I'm concerned

        • If you aren't getting anywhere with the dealership or VW Australia you can always document everything and take it to Consumer Affairs or Fair Trading. I believe there are new provisions in the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) that started from Jan 2011 with regards to refunds/returns. Too bad we don't have a clear vehicle lemon law like some other countries (I think the US have them).

Though so, dealer tried to say it was probably cut in pre delivery.

Another rattle? We did get a **** batch. The missus mentioned a rattling has started up again recently but its not exactly the same as the fuel line one.

Will be the missus first and last VW I suspect, having to go back so many times is a dead set pain in the arse.

I posted quite a while ago on doing this after a trip to the dealer who was unable to resolve the rattle.
My fix was to use some rubber hose that plumbers use over copper pipes (about 300mm - 1200mm length can be purchased at Bunnings).
Cut a 300 mm length and then cut a slit down the entire length.
Unclip the fuel pipe (closest to the fender) and feed the rubber hose down over the top of the fuel line (whilst carefully wiggling) until it wont go any further.
Trim of the excess and re-clip the fuel line.
Worked like a charm - no more fuel line rattle.

TCO - wish I'd seen that one. But good to know it worked for you too. Today the rattle came back, so I used spare foam from my camera case and squeezed about 25cm of it down the left side of the pipes, up against the wheel well side. Rattle stopped and I think the foam will subdue the vibration that you can visibly see happening on the feeder pipe - the one in the picture with the big black clip. You can just make out that the vibration and rubbing has resulted in the black insulation around the nearby wiring harness rubbing off!!

                    • Hi all, just started happening the past few days. Everytime i sit it makes a creaking noise and also when taking corners at speed there's also creaking that comes from the the dash (this is not the rattle that others have experienced).

I am booking it in for my dealer to have a look at, but just wondering if anyone has had a similiar issue and if they got a fix for this.

Possible fix: I just adjusted the seat backwards and forwards a couple of times and then put it back to my preferred setting and the creaking was gone. Will have to check tomorrow to confirm but yeah very happy that it disappeared (hopefully for good).

                      • Has anyone had issues with their polo the same as the infamous golf TSI 'chirp'? I've just hit 8,500km and just noticed a faint cricket today!

More importantly has VW come up with a fix for it yet?

Onya VW. Another clueless dealership swapping anything out under warranty. Another unhappy customer. why don't VW just knock a couple of grand off each car and let customers fend for themselves for an independent mechanic...

                              • Yes, mine has it though either I don't notice it anymore or it has died down a bit. I know exactly how to make it happen though and generally, I don't drive the car in a way to make it happen.

To answer your second question, yes, they have. It's called the new 1.6 single turbo engine that is (in one form) going into the Polo WRC car. This has been such a major issue that VW will not admit to, they keep all dealings with this issue under the table and as one member on here found out on his golf, issued a gag order and threatened legal action.
