What kind of driving do you do (short trips around the city or long freeway driving) and how many km's a week do you travel in the car?
TDI economy is only relevant when you do longer open road/highway driving. TDI's are not meant for stop/start driving and short trips around the city.
TDI's are not a common/popular choice in the Polo and A1, no doubt because they are "city cars" and the turbo petrol engines offered are very economical already.
Well really just want a Sline manual but the only ones I can find are in the TDI. I had. A1 sport S line and loved it to bits but the DSG dry plate clutch system was a hung of junk. I want a A1 S line in manual but I think the TID is my only option
But that said, iv been told the 1.6 diesels are very good engines, but is there anything I should be worried about apart from carbon build up?
Are there any known issues with these engines ?
I dont know of anyone on here who has a diesel engine in the Polo or A1. But if its the same 1.6 TDI engine that was used in the Golf TDI Bluemotion then yes its supposed to be quite a reliable and trouble free engine.
Its quite a good combo that 1.6TDI and the 5spd manual gearbox. Nice to drive and punchier than expected given its "only" got 66kw. Can be tuned though to be even better.
Alternatively, go for the real daddy, the S1 with a Golf R engine and 6spd manual. Bit more expensive, but you could probably get into 1 for about $25k. You have been blocked

Yeh looked at the s1 but way to pricy for a Hatch
Iv seen what guys been doing with the diesels and it’s kinda cool.
So in all they are more reliable then the two charge engines ?
Also did the A1 TDI have the ea189 or the clha engine ?
Or are they the same I’m so confused on these engines
You might need to go test drive one and have a look through the owners manual or look for the labels on the engine timing case to see what engine they use.

The advice given on first page is sound If you just using it as a town and around car a diesel is not for you.
Only way to run one is get it hot and keep it hot. Running it short distances will not do that and so you may have DPF problems which can be very expensive
