Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • passat b8 engine noise on start up

Hi Guys I'm new to the forum and would like some advice - I have a
Passat 2016 B8 TSI with engine noise on COLD start up (42,000km).
    Whirring sound from engine bay.
It does go away after a few seconds with the car idling & doesn't appear again for the entire day until the engines cold again.
I've taken it to VW and they've said its normal operational but I'm a little scared its timing belts or something grinding.
I haven't heard the noise on other Passat's or Tiguan when test driving from dealers.

I can share the video of the noise you can clearly hear it about 5 times.

The sound at 3-4 seconds is normal (as in my Golf with EA888 2.0 T engine does the same thing on a cold start, and I have heard others do it - its just the sound of the timing chain until some oil pressure builds up) but the sound that comes and goes at timestamp 5-7 seconds is odd.

It may or may not be something to be concerned with. VW will say its "normal" because they are only interested in raping your wallet once something actually breaks. Best take it to an independent VW specialist to be looked at. Where in Melb are you?

      Hi

You didn't mention if you have tsi or tdi. Not sure about tdi, but tsi do not have timing belt. I have b8 tsi and i can usually hear engine only on startup. After it, engine pretty much makes humming sound which barely can be heard.

If you still not happy about it, i would recommend you to visit guys from volkswerke - Doncaster.
