  • 2009 B6 Passat R36 Running Costs

    Hey guys,

Im 18 and looking for my first car, and im looking at the 2009 B6 R36 Passat in a sedan.

So i was just wondering about running costs and stuff, as it is kinda hard to get an estimate as the R variant requires different parts such as brake pads etc i have been told.

Without petrol, what do you guys roughly think you spend on your R36 sedan each year?

I really want the car, but as a student i dont have much disposable income so this will be a factor.

    Thanks,

    HColville

Hey man thanks for your reply,

I can only drive the 2009 and under as the 2010 is too powerful for p-platers, but yeah i will look out for the MY10 ones.

Also sorry to be annoying but do you have a rough estimate of the price? I want to have an estimate of costs before i buy.

      Thanks Heaps,

Hillybilly is right. If you are 18 and worried about servicing costs then a B6 Passat R36 is not for you. Dare I say any VW may not be a wise decision at this point in time. Go Japanese or Korean to start with - they can make interesting cars - and leave the European stuff until you are older.

Boring I know, but trust me I've been there with a classic European (not a VW) when I was young, many moons ago and it was not pretty...

As much as I love my car I could not in good conscience recommend it to a student.
I have had no major issues with mine but if something does go wrong it could potentially cost a fair bit to get it back on the road as there are some fairly complex parts like haldex coupling, DSG transmission, timing chain etc.
So unless you can replace those yourself or can get by without a car whilst waiting for funds to replace them it's maybe not he smart choice.
Btw there is no difference in engine between any of the my variants of R36.

For an 18 yr old starting out what he needs is something simple and reliable If he has a rich father or a big bank account maybe he could consider a complicated car like an R36.

If he is lucky enough to be able to afford a low Km and have a good run, well good luck to him. If he can only afford a higher K model well its like taking a ticket in Lotto. I wouldnt give my son a VW as he wouldnt maintain it well enough and so would suffer for it.

My suggestion of a Toyota or a Hyundai or even a Kia would give him more peace of mind and probably less running costs.

When he gets a job and can afford repairs if needed then maybe try an R36.
After owning approx 40 cars I would go back to Japanese after owning VW.s nice as they are as the thought of a DMF going or a DSG is a constant reminder to look after them more than my Coronas or Holdens.

Yeah, I've been saving all my money since a kid for a car so I guess its probably not the best idea as I dont wont to spend heaps on repairs, although ive got about 20k to spend so could get a car with around 70k km. But yeah I guess a cheaper car is best for the moment until I finish uni and can start earning an actual income. Thanks heaps guys you have been great, I guess I can start thinking about some better cars after about 4 years. Cheers for your help

If he buys a different make he may not need any parts which would be much more sensible.

I can say my Passat is the nicest car I have owned but it doesnt inspire confidence of longevity like some of my previous cars and thats what an 18 year old with no income needs.

                          2009 B6 Passat R36 Running Costs

I've got a 08 r36 with 224k on the clock. Still going strong, it's quicker then my mates 09 36 and his car has a tune and only 120k on the clock (not sure what's going on there....)

Timing chain and Dsg is possibly the main worry. Timing chain is about 2.5k to repair and Dsg well if you hunt around you can find cheap replacements. I picked up a low km one for 1k, clutches can wear which it did so on my CC which has 210k and usually cost $600-700 plus labour.

However I see where you are coming from I was once a uni student and drove a twin turbo 3000gt the time, didn't care about costs or maintenance just wanted the car which was expensive to run and costly to maintain lol. The r36 is a awesome car but I don't daily it, it's the weekender I use a diesel CC during the week as I do 35-40k of driving a year. However with something like a diesel CC you get twice the mileage per a tank and diesel is cheaper per a litre then 98 octane per a litre. Consider a tuned diesel and you'll be left with more cash in your account, the CC tuned is quicker then a MK6 GTI with a stage 1 tune. I've compared with friends cars

Also to add, I do the servicing on the cars my self, by oil in bulk ect, if you can do certain things your self then your running costs will be much lower compared to taking it to a shop...

If I was in your situation with 20K to spend I'd be looking at a Toyota 86. Nice to drive, economical, reliable and P plate friendly. Plenty to chose around that price point and good resale to boot. I owned a Honda Integra Type R for 14 years (bought it new) and it was fantastic. It was reliable and economical to run as well as being a great track car.

                            Good luck in your search.

I would agree with kamold. I bought my r36 from a uni student who copped dsg and power steering after maxing out purchasing the car. I have always kept 5k spare with the car as sometimes things just happen and I do all the work on cars myself. That being said if u get a clutch or timing belt issue in any car it is always worthwhile keeping at least 2k spare. My 2 cents anyway
