There are some Haldex DIY's for the Golf R which would be a very similar setup (if not identical) to your Passat. Something like this: Cam Follower, Haldex + Filter, Diffs, DSG and Engine Fluids Swap. - VW GTI MKVI Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVI Forum / VW GTI Forum - Golfmk6.com

Due every 3 years on these, and no filter replacement required.
Procedure, besides the filter replacement, is in the link above.
Make 100% sure you're draining and re-filling the Haldex coupling. It only holds ~700mL. Easy to get confused and dump the Haldex oil and overfill the diff, and vice-versa. Has happened a lot.
Supercheap sells a 1L hand pump bottle. They used to the STM Tom Thumb ones, but now they do their own in-house version.
You'll need a 5mm Allen key to undo the fill/inspection plug, and an 8mm Allen key to undo the drain bolt.'07 Transporter 1.9 TDI

I don't think it's that dear though. It's like $60 or thereabouts.
