Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

R36 Brakes

Hi All,
I got the ATE rotors and ceramic pads put on the car by a VW specialist near work. All good thus far but I have only done about 30k's since. Will report back on my experience after a couple of hundred k's.
I have one question though, the receipt for the work performed by the mechanic indicates they have put on R32 rotors. I rang the mechanic to check and they mentioned they are the exact same rotors, just looking to confirm with the collective that this is accurate???
I looked at the R36 Technical information page in the forums and there appears to be two front rotor sizes.

Mine said that they were R32 brakes as well mate. Nothing to worry about. I did confirm this with eurobahn as well.2013 Touareg V8TDi - Black, LED Interior Mods, LED Projector "VW" Door Courtesy Lights, 20" VW Mountain Rims with A/T Tyres, Pioneer SX Roof Platform with some 4x4 accessories and a whole lotta torque

Shout out to Adam at eurobahn. Ordered front and rear ATE ceramic pads last Thursday and delivered yesterday.. Friendly service and fast postage. They'll be installed on Friday and I'm going on a decent road trip for a week so can report back on how they go.

Just had my rear brakes done by Volks Muller. They recommended the ATE ceramic pads and rotors and gave me a good price.
When I bought my car the front brakes were replaced but I was told that the rears were fine. Well, after another 8,000km that was definitely not the case.
I had to wait a few days to get this done and by the time I got to the workshop it sound like they were metal to metal. Which in fact they were! Whilst the outside pads still had a bit of meat the inside pads were really back to metal. It was a real shock to me.Biscay Blue MY10.5 Passat R36 Wagon

Hi All,
I have been slack and not provided my feedback as yet, so here is a quick overview.
I found that the initial bite of the new set-up (both cold/hot) to be less than the factory set-up. Which for me is better as I feel the new set-up is more progressive rather than the instantaneous grab experienced on many occasions previously. So it basically makes me look like less of a nufnuf when I put too much pressure onto the brake pedal and come to a jerky stop. Nevertheless if you need to pull up quickly you will have no issue.
In terms of dust, there has definitely been a reduction, but is far from nonexistent. I have gone from cleaning the wheels weekly to cleaning monthly.
Would I recommend as an alternative to factory set-up? Yes, it has saved me money and cleaning time for the trade off of a very slight reduction in braking performance, which is more than adequate for my driving needs.
Hope this helps.Last edited by Nos; 04-01-2016, 11:46 AM.

Bit off topic, but has anyone experienced any low-speed squealing coming from their brakes after replacing both pads and rotors?
Had my R36 done not too long ago and I'm finding that (on some occasions) when doing <20km/h, I get this squealing noise which goes away when I either speed up or just tap the brakes.Biscay Blue Volkswagen R36 MY09

Best thing to do is to give them a little bit of stick! Sometimes they can get a nice shine if there is alot of low speed soft braking being done. Go for a fang and give them some pressure and then see how you go. I have heard this before but not on a vw. I havent had anything squeal on mine as yet.2013 Touareg V8TDi - Black, LED Interior Mods, LED Projector "VW" Door Courtesy Lights, 20" VW Mountain Rims with A/T Tyres, Pioneer SX Roof Platform with some 4x4 accessories and a whole lotta torque
