  • VIC - mechanic / shop needed

    Hola

so im trying to work out what’s going on with my transmission

it goes clunk and jerks when you’re moving off the stop lights. Usually more so when it’s stopped on a very slight incline.

can also sometimes hear it shifting from 3rd into 2nd when rolling to a stop.

a fair amount of my driving is peak hour stop start traffic, so it’s annoying to say the least.

What I’m trying to achieve is to get an understanding of the cause and solution to the above issue

    as well as

i personally feel like the car isn’t planted. If I hit a small gap/crack in the road, or small pothole / utility cover on the road. It goes clunk.

it’s not wildly uncontrollable. But I do notice it. So want an idea of what’s the go? And the costs to make it feel planted. It’s not the tyres (p zeros on there) and the shocks were replaced 40k ago.

im happy to pay for the diagnosis but i am confident that there are no codes coming up.

What area of VIC are you in? If in Melbourne, are you north, south, east or west?

Your gearbox noise could be anything from a worn engine mount (specifically the 'dog bone' mount located under the gearbox) to an internal issue like a worn clutch pack or failing mechatronics on the DSG transmission.

Your suspension noise could be a blown shock absorber, strut mounts or worn suspension bushes etc - these Passats are 15+ years old now and will start needing regular parts replacement to keep it on the road for another 5-10 years.

Looking at your previous posts, you raised a topic in 2020 saying you have a Passat R36 and talking about how the car was not being smooth when taking off from traffic lights etc. Do you still have the same car now? https://www.vwwatercooled.com/forum/...hen-moving-off

      Yup. Same car

im in Richmond. But happy to move around for a diagnosis.

shocks were done 40k ago. Rear front lower arm busing 1k ago (why the fronts weren’t done at the same time, I don’t know and I don’t wanna talk about the “why”)

the current thinking is to get an estimate of what’s wrong, and what it’ll cost to fix. Truth is that at some point the cost benefit won’t make sense to me for this car.

I am tempted to go buy this as NVH increase doesn’t bother me as much

In terms of VW/Euro car mechanics in close proximity to Richmond, there are a few around:

        Volks Affair
        South Melbourne
        Ph: 03 9682 3377

        German Service Shop
        North Melbourne
        Ph: 03 9328 8458

When your shocks were replaced, do you know if they also replaced the strut tops and bearing mounts? The strut tops / bearing mounts are reknown for wearing out and causing knocking over bumps. You mention the rear lower bushings were replaced - these are also a well known failure point on these cars. Could also be sway bar end links or your ball joints. At this age, all that stuff is buggered and needs replacing.

Also with that Whiteline link you posted, the main (most expensive) component of that kit which are the gold coloured mounts are your rear lower control arm bushes - which you said have been replaced previously not too long ago.

How many km’s has the car done? I’ve had to do the front bushes on the front arms to cure a clunk but it’s more work than the rear bushes on the front arms as the trans etc gets in the way of removing the bolt.
Pringles are helpful as far as trans/clutch issues.
