Passat B7 - Front Brake Pad Replacement?

I recently purchased a 2011 Passat wagon which included a "4Plus Care" main-dealer servicing plan. At the most recent service, the dealer recommended replacing the front brake discs & pads, at a cost of about $900.

I'm hoping I can save some money by having the brake work done by a local independent VW specialist. But, I have a couple of questions about exactly what needs doing:

1. Is it necessary to change both the discs and pads at the same time, or should I just ask for the pads to be changed?
2. How urgent is this work? Do I need to get the parts replaced ASAP, or can it wait until later in the year, or even until I notice a warning light or an unusual noise?

The reported thicknesses according to the dealership (Dec 2021 => Dec 2022, about 4000km driven) are:

• Front pads: 4.0 => 2
• Front discs: 23.0 => 22.8
• Rear pads: 8.0 => 6
• Rear discs: 10.0 => 11.7 (!)

2mm is getting pretty low(wear sensor should be triggered soon) , discs can be machined and reused but with soft OEM rotors they are normally undersized.

What engine does your Passat have? As the brake sizes are different.

Shop around with some independents, non OEM is a option, DBA rotors and Bendex pads make a good combo.

The engine code is CFGB (2.0 TDI 125kW).

Go to Run Auto Parts | Australia's OEM Auto Parts Store | Car Care & Service parts and enter your car details. Your car should have 312mm diameter front ventilated disks and 282mm diameter rear solid disks.

You can get a brake package from Bosch which includes front disks and pads for $223 and rear disks and pads for $198. This is fine if you are going to do the work yourself, but if you are planning to have a mechanic install the parts then check with them first if they allow you to provide your own parts - as many do not allow this.

So the front rotors are 312mm with a min thickness of 22mm, which means you can't reuse your current ones.

All up parts are about ~$240 retail. Just add labour at your fav independent or DIY it
