Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Bang for buck front pads/rotors? 340mm? 312mm? What?

    Hi there,

I'm reading a plethora of mixed messages in regard to what pads and rotors fit my car. One site will say one thing, another will say something else. I'm capable of changing them myself, but do you think I can work out exactly what to buy?

I don't need top end performance.. I just want well priced and reliable.

    Cheers.

I should stipulate that its a 2012 125 TDI Highline sedan.

Why not just pop a wheel off and measure them? I very much doubt you have 340mm disks on a Passat as these are whats fitted to the Golf R and GTI Performance.

Much more likely that you will have 312mm disks as this will be VW parts bin stock and is whats fitted to normal GTI Golf.

I just bought some Bosch disks from Automotive Superstore last week - they should arrive today or tomorrow. Their info suggests your car has 312mm front disks.

They have a sale on at the moment with Bosch, Brembo, DBA, Protex and TRW disks/pads. Their prices are good so if you need brakes you may as well buy them now.

That site just confuses me.. down the bottom it shows my vehicle as compatible, but at the top it says it's not. There are so many options that I can't make heads or tails of it.

Would these be the correct pads?

Yes they should be the correct ones. I just cross checked on the Bendix website and they have this part number as a match for a 2012 VW Passat TDI: https://www.bendix.com.au/shape/db1849

Hi Lucas.....why did you go with Bosch rather than the ATE discs ?

Price basically. The ATE disks were going to cost about $750-800 and I got the Bosch on sale for just under $300. I couldnt resist the price and they wont be any worse than my factory shagged disks.

Did you get new pads....after limited driving on my new ceramic pads i must say the dust is very minimal if at all.

I have the ATE Ceramic pads which have been on the car for about 2,500kms. Dust is very low (although not as good as the Akebono pads on my SQ5) but my original disks are well worn so just wanted to get new disks.
